This is an interesting forum for a journal entry. As I am typing, I do have to say that I am very much enjoying this. I feel as if I were writing in a diary. Ahh, completely anonymous. I think that mindset is good when thinking and talking about issues regarding poverty. It keeps me true to my feelings.

I know that in my future career I will be faced with many issues regarding the difficulties and struggles surrounding those below, on, or nearing the poverty line. I plan on working in the public school system as an Early Elementary School teacher, perhaps first or second grade. In public school work, you are faced with students and parents from all different backgrounds, understanding, and abilities. This takes empathy, however, as was mentioned in the prompt it is easy to take the empathetic tendencies of our minds and morph them into an obsession of the issue, I know that I am prone to doing that.

I want my service learning to be benefital to myself and children, they are my main focus. I have not decided what exactly I am going to do but helping brighten the lives of children will be the main purpose. I see this happening either directly or indirectly. TBD.

Poverty is depressing. The struggles and effects are devastating for some and result in a perpetuation of issues for them. The imbalance of understanding, resources and abilities is getting out of hand in my opinion and will only continue to get worse. With the upcoming election I have the government's influence in mind and it only furthers my frustration. I know so many people with such limited financial resources and who desperately depend of things like food stamps who love Donald Trump. It baffles me and almost makes me want to give up on those people due to their level of delusion.

In addition to feeling concerned and frustrated with this topic, to be honest, it has fueled me into my service learning project which will be done at a local elementary school.

I currently work full time at a Private Montessori School and also have a full load of classes so squeezing in time to fulfill these obligations with be a sacrifice in and of itself. However, I do understand that the sacrifice I will be making is really representative of the constant battle of the parent and people also trying to get by but with a completely different subset of issues and stresses than I have.

I am looking forward to the volunteer work in the way that I currently work with privileged children, 3-6 year olds in a very expensive private primary school. It will be a good reminder of the harsh reality of low-income lives and how those lives manifest during the school day. I will be focusing on everything from the general attitudes and abilities of these children versus to the general treatment and opportunities they have at school. I think I am going to do simple volunteer work such as reading assistance or something similar.
