Meanwhile, a young woman named Ann (Annie) Deever, who used to date Larry, arrived the night before and is now sleeping in Larry's old room. Sue Bayliss and Lydia Lubey also come by to chat with their husbands. A boy named Bert pretends to be a police officer that Joe supposedly hires, imagining a jail in Joe's basement.

Chris Keller, Joe and Kate's other son, walks in and tells Joe that he saw Kate in the yard during the storm when the tree fell, and she ran inside, crying. They both understand that Kate is holding onto the hope that Larry will come back, even though they know it's not possible. Three years ago, their factory produced aircraft engines for the Air Force. When it was discovered that someone had knowingly shipped defective engines that led to the deaths of twenty-one American pilots, Steve was found guilty, while Joe was cleared because he wasn't present when the faulty engines were sent out. The entire play centers around this situation.
