What's a "Crucible"?

A Crucible is actually a pot, a metal pot that you heat up extremely, extremely high. When it is heated, you pour metal inside and it begins to bubble up, these are known as impurities, and these impurities were meant to resemble/symbolize the witches that would occurred during the Salem Witch Trials of 1692. What's cool about these crucibles, is that they were the inspiration of the play "The Crucible" an incredible and inspirational play.

Background of "The Crucible"

Arthur Millers' The Crucible was inspired by the Salem Witch Trials of 1692, as well as the Communist Hunts during the 1950s. Miller was found to be a "Communist," so when Miller wrote the play for The Crucible it was considered the most awful play and incredibly hard to watch because if anyone did come to the play, that person would mean that they were a Communist. An what was happening during that time? Communist Hunts, of course. Even if you were a family member or a friend who discovered that you were a Communist, they'd no longer be with you. So, that is what Arthur Miller gained inspiration.

The Salem Witch Trials of 1692

The Salem Witch Trials are like a checkpoint in human history. Because it is so hard to fathom how these events could even be possible; however, they were. These witch trials were made to figure out who did black magic, Houdini, the devil, a witch. Let's go back. Betty Parris and a few of her friends didn't like how their lives were, then a witch, Tituba showed them black magic, voodoo type of magic. So then, the four girls began accusing other people of their hometown, like homeless people or people who spoke to themselves. Because so many people have been accused, when they were brought to trial, the girls would act as if their spirits were messed with and would act erratic and very chaotic. By then end of the trials in 1692, over 200 people were jailed.

The Puritans

The puritans arrive. Now you ever wonder why we are judgmental and pushy? Thanks to the puritans. The puritans didn't like how churches were, they wanted to set the world back to pureness and beloved that God had sent them in order to do so; however, it was soon realized that apparently, the Devil began coming after them in order to stop. That is what would then lead to witch hunts, which would then lead to the Salem Witch Trials. It's unbelievable how so few events can lead to a greater one. In the worst way.

The Puritans' Theological Beliefs

The puritans had these seven strong beliefs. One, total disparity: Human kind is totally sinful through the fall of Adam and Eve and damned for eternity. Two, predestination: You're either an "elect" (saved) or "unregenerate" (damned) in which salvation comes to those "elect." Three, limited atonement: Christ only died for the "elect." Four, Grace: The free gift of salvation as you could feel God in an intense emotional fashion. Five, theocracy: a government that blends church and state. Six, City Upon a Hill Theory: the new MA colony would be a great place of reform where God would be found in scripture. Finally, Seven, education: a strong beliefs that education was established in order to read the Word of God.
