For me, “Hills like white elephants” shows the struggle between two people who don’t really understand each other anymore. The man wants Jig to have an abortion and keeps saying it’s simple, but he doesn’t seem to care about how she really feels. I feel bad for Jig because she seems confused and sad, and the man just wants things to go back to the way they were. When she says the hills look like white elephants, it feels like she sees something special in the pregnancy, even if it’s difficult. This story made me think about how hard it is to make big decisions when the people around you don’t really listen.

If I were Jig’s friend, I would tell her to think carefully about what she really wants. It is her body and her future, so she should not let anyone pressure her. If she feels sad or unsure, that matters. She should not ignore her feelings. I would tell her to imagine both choices and think about what she can live with. I would also remind her that someone who truly cares about her will support her no matter what she decides.
