One connection I made from reading Villarosa's journey is that many doctors fail to establish a rapport with their patients and fail to listen to patients and their concerns. I have experienced this when I visit health care provider. JK

A disturbing point made in chapter one of UTS was the fact that in order to be taken seriously and respected when in the presence of a doctor or nurse, Villarosa and her family felt they had to look and talk in a certain way.

Something graphic i read was that a lady had to pull an IDU out of her vagina that was stuck in the tissue, somewhere it shouldn't be, all because the ER doctors ignored her and refused to help her. She was left in excruciating pain and sterility.

I connected with her comment, "Put down the superwoman cape," I wrote in an article, "and ask for help." after reading chapter 1 of Under the Skin. People are nearly always hesitant to ask for help when they most need it, therefore we can all relate to this. I myself have had situations in my life that have tested me to the limit, but was afraid to call for help.

The fact that Linda and her family had to dress their best and present themselves professionally while her father was in the hospital to show the medical staff that they were someone, that they mattered in life, and that they had a life so the hospital wouldn't neglect her father was one aspect of the chapter that I found to be extremely shocking.

it’s honestly, not so shocking how prevalent racism is in our healthcare system and government when in a country that is said to be free and equal or accessible to all races. Linda Villarosa has brought up multiple cases in which being African American was the only logical reason why someone could be treated so poorly. Paragraph 6 page 3 is when Villarosa states “ from birth to death the impact on the bodies of Black Americans of living in communities that have been harmed by long-standing racial discrimination, of a deeply rooted and dangerous racial bias in our health-care system, and of the insidious consequences of present-day racism affects who lives and who dies.” Meaning the reason as to why African Americans have more difficulties with healthcare has been in plain sight, that stems very far back, to when racism first started and how it made it’s way to become “factual” in today’s society.

One interesting aspect from Chapter 1 of UTS is that after VillaRosa move from Chicago to Denver, the Friday before she started school, the principal had to call a school-wide assembly to explain that "Alameda Elementary was getting its first Black students". VillaRosa was a third grader at the time and no one spoke to her in two weeks because they were afraid to say the wrong thing. L.C

One disturbing aspect from chapter 1 on “Under the Skin” Villarosa has pointed out that African American mothers are most likely to die or lose their babies during birth than white mothers who haven’t even finished high school and just makes me more racism is affecting African Americans health. -NA

It was absolutelyb heartbreaking to read the stories of these black people who have been systemically affected by America that even the only people who are supposed to help them, ignore them and refuse to treat them because of the color of the skin. It was hard to read at times because these people were harmed for no reason.

Reading about When she got the phone from her mother to come quickly to the hospital but to dress in business attire and bring her cards from her position at the New York Time. Reminded me of a time when my grandmother was sick and had a home nurse but didn’t take care of her and my mom told them what she was doing wrong and tried to help but the nurse didn’t accept the help and told her she knew what she was doing but the nurse did not know my mom was an RN.

One shocking and disappointing aspect in the first chapter of UTS was the fact that black educated women still had higher chances of almost dying, dying , or losing their infants than their white counterpart. B.U

One disturbing fact that I read in this chapter is that a women yanked her IUD out her vagina leaving her in excruciating pain and sterility. She was rushed to the ER due to the dangerous amount of blood loss. All of it was caused due to the refusal of the doctor to remove it. S.Q.
