Amnesty International released a one year update on it's latest report, Deadly Delivery: Maternal Healthcare Crisis in the USA in May 2011. To follow up, here are the numbers people need to be aware of.

With a big bold blue numerics in the infographic poster shows that there is a twice of a higher chance of maternal death in more low poverty areas. In the slightly smaller blue digits however, shows a list of mortality ratios per 100 000 livebirths in other countries by ethnicity . Non hispanic leading with 34 maternal mortality and followed with American Indian/Alaska Native,Asian/ pacific islander, not Hispanic white and finally 9.6 with Hispanics.

In the year 2009, the US cesarean rate is 32.9%. That is the highest of all time it has been for the past 13 years. 21% of the risk of maternal death is higher than in states with the cesarean rate as low as 33%. One every 15 minutes, the number of woman who nearly die from pregnancy related complications goes up to 34,000. In fact, 12.7 deaths per 100,000 live births in the US are 3 times higher than the governments Healthy People 2010 target.

In conclusion, everyone should work hand in hand to educate and mobilize the public. Also, work to protect people wherever justice, freedom, truth and dignity are denied because mothers deserve better, and children need their mom’s.
