When reading the schedule of an online student, I became quite envious of this "example person". I have taken online classes all throughout undergraduate, as well now as an all-online graduate student. I find similarities in the well-scripted schedule (I write many to-do lists in order to make sure things happen on time). However, this example person only seems to be doing an online course or two, without any additional work or activities to schedule in. I work full-time, which obviously takes up more than my 8:00-3:30 school hours. Along with work, I also take on additional jobs through the school, helping at sporting events and school dances. With my work schedule, I also am a member of a foundation to plan a summer camp for children with Autism. My biggest difference with this example person is the way that I schedule my time to work on schoolwork. I do schoolwork after the school day is over, on the weekends, and just about any free moment that I have to get something done. This example person has the luxury of having an entire day to schedule in and work on all of their classwork.

There is certainly some distinct differences between myself and the online learner in the online learning schedule. First, there is a high degree of structure within my daily schedule. I cannot take time out to fold laundry or get fresh air or any number of the other things suggested. Additionally, though I am an adult, my job takes priority over anything else that I do (besides my family), so most online school that I "attend" must be done on the weekends and in the evenings. We are similar in that, theoretically, any online learning needs to cover the same amount of material as in a physical classroom space. This means that an online learner and a physical space learner should be gaining the same insight.

I understand that many online learners here through UNK have different situations, jobs, families, and responsibilities. For me personally, there are quite a few similarities and differences with that online learner at Gwinnett Online Campus. For starters, we both start the day by checking email and creating a schedule for the day. I try to check my UNK email early before leaving for school to make sure I am on track. While reviewing my teaching schedule for the day, I also plug in times that I could sneak in some graduate work (during specials, maybe a lunch period, after tutoring, and so on). As the high school students might experience, most of my work is done at night. The differences are rather large as I am a full time students and full time teacher. If possible I can work on parts of an assignment here and there during the day, but most of my time is spent working with students.

One of the main differences is that as an adult online learner you class time isn’t so structured. A lot of this has to do with adult learners having many other responsibility, such as family and work on top of class work. Sometimes these other responsibilities come first in scheduling, especially jobs. Adult learners have to schedule their own learning time much more than those students completing elementary and secondary school online. As an adult learner you usually don’t have as much one on one online contact with other students and the professor as students completing high school or even elementary school virtually. When it comes to completing assignments and having discussion boards both types of learning are similar.

Though most of the time I do not respond to emails until I am at a computer. Because I do work full time as a teacher, I often do not have time for my day to be consumed by online learning, rather I spend a few hours overnight completing tasks.

The similarity is that there is some sort of structure, but for me that is about where it ends. As I am sure I am in the same boat as most of you, my classes need to be sandwiched in between my job, family, and other activities. Schedules and copious lists abound! Sometimes I think it would be nice to have to check in at a certain time and have a "live" class. However, then I remember that I get interrupted about every 15 minutes with something and that might not be the best plan for me.
Kari

My online school work happens in the evenings after dinner, from 7 or 8 pm until 9 or 10 pm, and on the weekends, throughout both Saturday and Sunday. Another major difference is that I only have weekly assignments, instead of daily ones. A third major difference is that I don't attend a live instruction. My activity is all self-directed and done using my own time-management skills. Similarities include checking email, logging into coursework to check status of things, responding to teachers and discussion threads, and working independently.

I think there are basic similarities between the Gwinnett Online Campus learner and myself, but that is where it ends. We are both online learner. We have classes we are enrolled in. we both have teachers we can contact if need be. There may be more than one class each learner is enrolled in, but other than lunch, that is pretty much where it is identical.
I get up at 5 to be out the door by 6 am. No time for email or computers. When I arrive at school I get ready for my day and teach straight through until 12:15. 10 minutes for lunch and then tutoring from 12;30-1:00 back to the class room for a little of my plan period and check emails then and read some of my college lessons sometimes then about 1:30 it is time for choir and teach straight through until 3:45 and then an hour and a half commute home, make dinner, throw in a load of wash, do some college work then off to bed to do it all over again the next day. Stretch time and break time are few and far between. It's tough, but I chose to do it this way. I could have taken 1 class a semester and drug it out for years or 3 classes per semester.
I am an adult and have been for some time, and sometimes find it hard to get the motivation to go and work on classes.
A teenager would have to have far motivation than most of them that I know. Not impossible, but more work than most teenagers think.

Without a schedule and a specified time to tune into class, I often fall into procrastination mode.
Differences - I don't usually get around to emails until I'm eating lunch. I like to spend my lunch productively, so going through email is usually an easy one to bide my time. I also do not schedule "movement" time. I think that is an important part of focusing - burning restless energy. I have a difficult time scheduling that time for myself.

MORNINGI also wake up and prepare for the day. I even read scripture and do a devo on my phone. I check emails throughout the day. They get sent to my phone. Before class, I must make sure internet and projector work. Greet students for the day.I do not login to virtual homeroom and check announcements for vital information; check current grades, update calendar, as neededI write the daily agenda/checklist for our school day on the board. Unlike an online student, I am constantly moving throughout my classroom. When I get a break I will normally sit down to grade or prepare for the next lesson.MID-DAYI also enjoy lunch.I will listen to music, write, retrain skills, and complete homework with students. AFTERNOON Reading, recess, spelling, writing, and intervention time. My students also need to get up and move around and had to add an afternoon recess.Contrast to the an online student, I do not have to login to course but I do login into Drive to present my lessons.EVENINGSpent on after-school activities: college work, school work, girls on the run, grow group, girls bible study, game nights, exercising, movies in the winter and making dinner.

Often times, those taking online college courses are also working a full-time job, so it can be difficult to make time in the day to complete coursework.

While there are a few similarities, such as checking emails, discussions and the calendar, there are mainly differences. This to me is a typical high school student when school is in session. I work full time, have a part-time business that I run, have 3 very active kids to run around and watch while they participate in their activities. My school work time is typically in the evenings when everyone is home. I sit at my kitchen table with headphones on to drown out the noise of my family (all for the cause, lol). I do think it is important to schedule time and check in to the class throughout the day. The app on my phone is great to jump in and check grades or assignments if needed. I would say the life of an adult student is much more difficult than that of the high school students, even though they may not think so.
