Almost every restaurant provides plastic packing or paper packaging with plastic lining for people to serve food or bring back leftovers. This is a concern as the packaging is plastic leading to the creation of micro and nanoplastic, especially if the food is hot. Secondly, most people don't reuse the plastic packaging and most people would just throw it which environmentally detrimental as the plastic would not degrade but just break up into smaller pieces. Lastly, the paper packaging can't be recycled due to lack of technology to separate the lining from the paper and in the landfill the lining would not degrade as it is plastic.

I pledge to bring my own food, bring my own container when I go out so if I can't finish my food I can just put it in my container and to dine in more often. In addition to that, I would talk and encourage my friends to bring their own containers as well.

Reducing Plastic consumption

Plastic pollution is one of the most urgent environmental challenges today. Single-use plastics are used for only minutes but persist in the environment for hundreds of years, accumulating in landfills, waterways, and oceans. This not only damages ecosystems and marine life but also impacts human health through microplastics entering our food and water systems. Despite this, plastic consumption remains embedded in everyday convenience, making it easy to overlook its long-term consequences.

In response, I pledge to reduce my single-use plastic consumption by at least 70% over the next 8 weeks, while also encouraging behaviour change within my immediate community.

To achieve this, I will eliminate key sources of plastic in my daily routine by consistently carrying reusable alternatives (water bottle, coffee cup, containers, and shopping bags), refusing single-use plastics, and choosing low-packaging options when purchasing food. I will track my plastic use weekly to measure progress, identify patterns, and stay accountable.

Beyond personal change, this pledge focuses on leadership and influence. Each week, I will engage at least one person in a conversation or action around reducing plastic use — whether by sharing simple alternatives, encouraging reusable habits, or leading by example in social settings. My goal is to create a ripple effect where small actions extend beyond my own behaviour.

This pledge aligns with Sustainable Development Goal 12: Responsible Consumption and Production by reducing waste through avoiding single-use plastics and prioritising reusable alternatives. It also supports Goal 14: Life Below Water by limiting plastic pollution entering waterways and protecting marine ecosystems. Additionally, it contributes to Goal 3: Good Health and Well-being by reducing exposure to microplastics and harmful chemicals in food and water systems

By combining personal accountability with community influence, I aim to demonstrate how small, intentional steps can contribute to meaningful and lasting environmental change.

My pledge is to spark meaningful conversations about global challenges through artistic makeup and character creation.
Through this initiative, I aim to bring together diverse cultures and academic disciplines within the university, using visual storytelling as a tool to explore social, environmental, and economic issues.

Each month, I will create an artistic makeup look or character inspired by a different Sustainable Development Goal, using it as a starting point to raise awareness and encourage open conversations around its relevance in everyday life. These visual representations will act as accessible and engaging entry points for people from diverse backgrounds to connect with complex global challenges.

At the end of the year, I will facilitate a creative workshop where participants can design and embody their own characters based on the issues they feel most connected to. This space will promote dialogue, empathy, and critical reflection, encouraging individuals to relate these challenges to their own contexts and areas of expertise.

Through this process, participants will be invited to commit to small, meaningful actions in their daily lives that contribute to a more sustainable and equitable world.

This initiative aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals by fostering awareness, inclusion, and collective action through creative engagement.

Ultimately, my goal is to transform art into a platform for connection, reflection, and action toward sustainability.

Reducing Overconsumption

My pledge is to reduce overconsumption by consciously choosing ethical and sustainable brands.

Overconsumption significantly harms the environment through pollution generated during production and global distribution, including high carbon emissions, water usage, and chemical waste. Fast fashion accelerates these impacts by promoting constant consumption cycles and overproduction. It is also often associated with unsafe working conditions, low wages, and modern slavery, raising serious ethical concerns. In addition, the industry contributes to resource depletion, microplastic pollution from synthetic fabrics, and the growing issue of textile waste, as low-quality garments are quickly discarded and sent to landfill.

This commitment aligns with SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production and SDG 13: Climate Action, as it focuses on reducing waste, lowering demand for unsustainable production, and minimising environmental impact.

To uphold this pledge, I will avoid purchasing from fast fashion brands and instead prioritise ethical alternatives. I will actively research brands that demonstrate transparency and accountability within their supply chains, with a preference for Australian-owned and sourced businesses where possible. I will also share my knowledge with others, encouraging more informed and responsible consumption within my community.

Additionally, I will extend the lifecycle of clothing by donating wearable items rather than discarding them, and by making more intentional purchasing decisions that prioritise quality over quantity.

Through these actions, I aim to reduce my personal environmental footprint and contribute to a broader shift towards more sustainable consumption practices.

Educate and engage yourself in more environmental topics

As a finance & commerce student, I recognize the importance of carbon reduction as part of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) considerations. Higher greenhouse gas emissions released through industrial and financial activities have contributed to climate change issues, thus indirectly causing natural disasters. Yet, the linkage between economics and sustainability is underemphasized. The most recent event of oil disruption in the Strait of Hormuz has shifted the demand into alternatives like electric vehicles (EVs). This event could open new perspectives to minimize oil extraction and force the oil industry to develop more sustainable outcomes. These shifts demonstrate the importance of sustainability within financial markets and the need for industries to adapt more sustainable practices. It is important for us to stay informed and engaged as ESG factors not only influence investment decisions but also environmental and social outcomes.

This aligns with Sustainable Development Goal 4: Quality Education. I aim to obtain greater awareness by engaging in conversations with peers and encouraging more discussions about the relationship between sustainability and finance. To support this, I commit to weekly reading of financial, economic, and environmental news to deepen my understanding and share insights with others. At a personal level, I pledge to be an example of a responsible buyer. To be more specific, I avoid buying fast fashion, instead buying at thrift stores and engaging in DIY clothes. I track my spending to set up budget goals and minimize consumption on trendy, non-essential items or non-durable goods. I also perform meal preparation to reduce food waste and single-use plastic purchases while supporting local products. Through these actions, I aim to directly reduce my personal carbon footprint, making a closer step to a more sustainable future.

The media perspective on promoting and maintaining global justice, peace and inclusiveness

As a journalism student, I view Sustainable Development Goal 16 from a unique media perspective, moving beyond conventional ideas of war, violence and governance. Peace and justice are not only about ending armed conflict, but also about eliminating hidden harm such as hate speech, discriminatory narratives, online aggression and unequal information access.

Media plays a decisive role in shaping social harmony. Biased reporting and polarized content deepen division, while truthful, inclusive and balanced communication fosters mutual respect. I promise to uphold journalistic ethics, reject rumours, prejudice and extreme remarks, and respect diversity in race, gender, belief and perspectives. I will consciously reduce verbal violence and spread rational voices to maintain inclusive and safe public discourse.

Furthermore, I will connect my daily actions with social, economic and environmental sustainability. I will value transparency, human rights and equitable justice, and pay attention to vulnerable groups ignored by mainstream narratives. By improving media literacy, I can resist misleading information and supervise unfair phenomena.

Small individual choices collectively shape society. I am committed to using my communication skills to advocate tolerance, strengthen the rule of law awareness, and promote responsible public institutions. Through consistent and positive behaviour, I will contribute to a peaceful, fair and inclusive world, and support long-term global sustainable development.
