the story lacks structure (punctutation, chapters, details) because it is supposed to relfect the life after the apocolypse. No names because it doesnt matter in a society where all you do is keep who you want close and you already know them. Also don't need any details, but that also doesn't matter in a world where there is no need to describe to others. He lacks what the world doesn't need purpose for anymore or doesn't have

The author used a very informal and relaxed structure with no chapters, no quotations, and funky paragraphs. He did this to display that life to him is dismal and all blends together. The structure also adds to the feel of a personal dialogue

The lack of chapter headings shows how in an apocalyptic world, time and spacing in between events doesn't really matter. The way the chapters blend together shows how insignificant events and time are when the world has become chaotic and time has become irrelevant. When you're just struggling to survive and get your next meal, time is the last thing that really matters.

The lack of quotation marks within the dialogue in the book demonstrates how alone the man and the boy are. Quotation marks are really unnecessary anyways because the majority of the dialogue is only between the man and boy, so it's easy to follow along with and still be able to comprehend what is going on in the story. Just knowing that quotation marks were not needed because of how little characters there were shows how isolated they were.

The author did not include punctuation to reflect the ongoing worry he had running through his mind. The missing punctuation in the dialogue between the man and his son emphasizes the idea that life will start over in this post-apocalyptic world. They basically have to let go of their old knowledge to start over in this new, different world.

It plodded along at its constant, unchanging speed, like the never-ending journey of the father and his son. The structure of the words matched the world around them.
