In 2013, the Ukrainian President fled the country due to a protest in Kyiv. This protest was met with violence from security. Civilians were angry that the president had rejected a deal with the EU for more economic involvement. In early 2014, violent conflict broke out due to Russia's annexation of Crimea. In March, Russian troops took control of the Ukrainian part of Crimea. This whole conflict ended up being being an active stalemate. In 2018, the United States approved the sale of anti-tank weapons to Ukraine. However, in February of 2022, Putin took it upon himself to declare a special military operation because of the alleged "genocide" of Russians in Ukraine.

Ukraine as a nation has been strong through all of these hardships, however their identity has strengthened. Even though it is said that there are many different types of people in Ukraine, there is a large consolidation between them because their nationalism is so strong. This strong identity has helped Ukrainians fight against the Russians with vigor. Just today, on the 9th of November, 2022, Russia ordered troops to withdraw from Kherson city. The Ukrainians are doing all they can to keep what is theirs.

They now have control back over this city. The Ukrainian people fought hard, but in the end they didn't win in this city.
In September, Ukraine recaptured of lot of the northeastern Kharkiv region, including the city of Izium. This city was an important logistics hub for the Russians.
In October, a bridge connecting Crimea to Russia was damaged heavily by blasting. Russia blamed Ukraine for this attack, even though they said that it was not them. This spurred for Russia to attack Ukraine with more vigor.

This war is going on today, and has been since this past February. Tens of thousands of Ukrainians have died, and people are being taken as war prisoners. This has caused global relations to become tense due to Russia's sway over the world. Many countries are too scared to help Ukraine, because they don't want what is happening to Ukraine to happen to themselves.

The whole world has been affected by this war due to the Internet, and globalization. Ukraine has been hit the hardest, with Russia being an extremely powerful country. They have held their own for a very long time, however, and have stuck together during hard times. Europe is also affected by this war, because a lot of their power is supplied by Russia. With the war happening, and certain areas being damaged, this power isn't coming as plentifully as it was before. Even in the United States we are a bit affected. Our government has to figure out if we should help Ukraine, and risk going into a World War, or if we should step back and leave them to their own devices.

Both Russia and Ukraine must fight according to the international humanitarian treaty law (the four Geneva Conventions of 1949 and its first additional protocol of 1977 (Protocol I), and the Hague Conventions of 1907 regulating the methods and means of warfare), as well as the rules of customary international humanitarian law because they are a sworn part of these. If they do not abide, this could be taken as an act of war.
