I agree with the idea that American's have passion for developing new technology. Every couple of years the company, Apple, has come out with bigger and better technological advances. Apple has found new ways of advancing its technology and they have found new cool ways to advertise them. Most people today, in U.S. culture, have some sort of cell phone on them.

I disagree with the idea that Americans value and emphasize helpfulness, personal kindness, aid in disasters, etc... because when Hurricane Maria hit Puerto Rico, the U.S. did the complete opposite of help. Rather than sending food and aid and helping to build the country back up, Trump moved on from it, and the death toll rose from 64 to 2,975 people in a year as a result of lack of resources. Ignoring what was happening in Puerto Rico resulted in the death toll to rise, and still America didn't help. This shows where our values lie.

I agree. Especially from the Millennial's and Generation Z, many individuals are able to take initiative and rise from the bottom to the top of society in just a few years. For example, James Charles is 19 year old guy with a huge talent. He is a beauty guru who has been posting videos on YouTube for multiple years. He has over 14 million subscribers and has become a millionaire because of it.

Material Comfort

I agree that Americans not only expect a high level of material comfort, but they also love and yearn for it. The whole idea of being successful and living your best life is one that many admire and work towards, and that's where material comfort comes in. Other Americans also value others who are wealthy, and put them on a pedestal which they are quite happy being on. This idea of material comfort can be traced back to the 80's where the Reagans created this idea that money and wealth made you a good person. Since then American has been obsessed with the materialistic lifestyle.

I agree that Americans value achievement and success. Americans take much pride in personal achievements and being the best. There's an adrenaline that comes with competition that pushes Americans to work harder to do better and be the best. In the article we see a man who makes $125,000 a year plus bonuses at age 24 in NYC who hates his job but still continues to keep it because of the pay and title that comes with it. Americans value achievement more than happiness.

I agree that American's value education. Americans take pride in knowing they got a good education and they compete to be the "smartest". Once you have completed high school, Americans are expected to go to college. This is where American's compete because certain schools only except certain amounts of people. They take the people who are hard workers, and are smart and educated students. In recent years the amount of students going to college after high school is neither increasing or decreasing. In late 2014, the percent of students that went to college was 65.4%. That was the lowest amount of people that have moved on to college in a decade. In more recent years (2016-2017), the amount of students going to college after high school has increased to 69.7%. The amount of students fluctuate every year but it is still considered a value in American society. Many families in America have considered it an expectation but now more options have opened up causing these young students to differ in their decisions.

Romantic Love

I disagree that humans value romantic love. Especially with younger generations hook up culture tends to replace meaningful and deep relationships. People are also more focused on work and self fulfillment then committing to a relationship. In this article linked below it states, "The most recent data suggest that between 60 percent and 80 percent of North American college students have had some sort of hook-up experience (Arnett 2000)." This shows how common hookup culture is.

In the U.S. friendships are very important to have. These people are the ones you can lean on and have good conversations with. While there is drama and secrets, there are many real friendships which thrive. Having a good amount of friends makes others feel better and gets them through tough times, as well as make good memories and do fun things.
