I think it would be alot of work from a legislative perspective and to educate the general population. However, I think it is necessary to make the change. The current system utilising prisons is ineffective, costly and traumatising. I am for the idea of progressing away from incarceration and towards prison abolition

To the general public who know little information on the prison system, it would be scary to abolish prisons and let so called 'prisoners' back into society. Releasing prisoners back into the community where people don't want them released could mean that they cause further harm not only to society but to themselves as well.

I feel like the idea of abolishing prisons is not realistic. I think our society needs prisons in order to function, it would be unrealistic for us to simply ditch a method of punishment that has been used for hundreds of years before. We should aim to reform it to become better suited to our society nowadays, but we should not be getting rid of it.

I do not really know how well prison abolition would work because even though we have less severe forms of punishment it has been stated that those forms of punishments such as CCOs as well as electronic monitoring have little effect on the perpetrator and their actions. My only worry is that if we get rid of incarceration completely what will be substituted for it in order to punish those that do the wrong thing.

Id like to think that there is the possibility of a happy medium between the two but if there is a major prison reform then there is every chance that the problem is only manipulated and given a different flavour. The same goes for abolition, this would be an extremely lengthy process and has the potential to essentially let people who commit crimes off the hook. On one hand I think that there has to be some level of punitiveness, but on the other hand it is punitiveness that is one of the reasons why prisons are failing.

I feel like there is no need to abolish prisons in general however a major reform needs to be had in order to modernise and update the prison system. If prisons were abolished, I'd feel nervous and a little scared to go out and about because you don't know who you are walking past in the street and what could end up happening to you. Even though I have the same feeling now, not having a prison system where perpetrators can go for reform and rehabilitation, there is an added anxiety and safety issue to people out in the community.

Abolishing prisons would be a progressive and much-needed change given that many people experience human rights abuses etc due to the failings of the system we see today. However, it might be difficult to implement because society may fail to look at the benefits of abolishing prison therefore it makes me feel hopeful to an extent given that much more still needs to be done in educating the public

I think overall its a process we need begin. I think the first step is really changing our idea on how we see crime , justice and punishment . Shifting our perspective from punitive to transformative. Even if prisons remain , dont have them be the way they are , allow open spaces with yards and recreation , therapy , life skills , education all skills and rehabiltation people would need to escape the cycle of the CJS and violence. Too many go in and out of prisons at the moment , if we focsed actually helping rather than punishment , we can achieve justice for victims , protect society and stop/limit the cycle of people going in and out of the CJS.

I believe that abolishing the prison system may be effective, in the way of our current penal system is ineffective and and over incarcerated. in such I think that there are alternative ways to punish an offender for their crime as well upholding the legal principle.

abolishing the prisons can affect society for example prisoners who do not feel guilty or shameless about the acts they have done in the past they could be dangerous in society for recommitting the acts again and the civilians will be worried and feel in danger.

The suggestions to abolish prisons feels very fantastical and disconnected from the reality of a criminal justice system which is influenced and impacted by “law and order” pressures from media and the political system. As an idea, prison abolition would be extraordinary. The opportunity to redirect billions of dollars currently “wasted” on an ineffective prison system would allow possibilities for true reformation and rehabilitation. Money could be spent on addressing the myriad of social issues which contribute to crime – addiction, abuse, poverty, homelessness, societal alienation, mental health challenges, domestic violence, gambling - and an increased focus placed on preventative measures. I am excited by the idea of abolishing prisons but I do not believe it will ever occur.
