How is syphilis contracted?

Syphilis is spread by direct contact with someone who has an active sore called a chancre. Syphilis is caused by a pathogen called treponeme pallidum.

The most recognizable symptom of syphilis is painless sores located on the genital area, on or inside of the mouth, or any part of the body that has had contact with someone else's sore. The first stage is characterized by soreness of the heals and a rash appearing, and after this most people do not experience any other symptoms for years after contracting the infection.

A baby born with syphilis can experience extreme bone damage and abnormalities, anemia, kidney and/or liver damage, they can also become jaundice due to liver damage caused by the infection. It is also possible that a baby never experiences any of these effects and lives a completely normal and healthy life.

Treatment for syphilis

The most common form of treatment for syphilis is taking penicillin. The problem with this is that tons of people are allergic to this medication. If this is the case, it can also be treated with doxycycline or tetracycline.

Treatment in infants

The CDC recommends that any child with congenital syphilis be treated with aqueous crystalline penicillin every 5 hours for 10 days to ensure that the lasting effects are at a minimum.
