Address: Nieuwe Gracht 7, Haarlem

As a 21-year-old, Philip Barnaart had his reception house built on the Haarlem canal by Abraham van der Hart. It resulted in an almost un-Dutch city palace with the best-preserved Empire interior in the Netherlands.

During 2012-2019, extensive research into the architectural finishes was carried out by multiple researchers. The house is a total concept; however, each room has its own face: they are different in colour and use of materials. For example, the antechamber has painted decoration on canvas, the salon is gilded, and the walls of the dining room are fitted with imitation marble. The fact that the original bills from the building campaign have been preserved, made it possible to compare finds in the house with the documentation. While the salon retains its original golden and purple (now brown) wall hangings, and furniture, other rooms have been restored or even recreated.

Van der Hart was also responsible for the Mayors dwelling in Amsterdam which can be visited on Thursday (Two canal houses – tour B).

House Hodshon retains several rooms on the bel-étage with their original wall decoration and colour scheme. Similar to House Barnaart, it features a variety of materials and colours, representing Neoclassical style.

Address: Spaarne 16, Haarlem

Pieter Teylers Huis is the former home of Pieter Teyler (1702-1778) and is closely linked to the creation of Teylers Museum, the first and oldest museum in the Netherlands. Teyler was a wealthy silk manufacturer and banker. Living in the Age of Enlightenment, Teyler had a keen interest in art and science. Based on the idea that knowledge could enrich mankind, he created collections in both fields. In his will, he stipulated that his fortune should be placed in a foundation whose objectives included the promotion of art and science.

A comprehensive restoration of this home was completed in 2021. The AFR conducted in the Pieter Teylers House was crucial and directive in achieving a harmonious blend of both Baroque and Neoclassical styles. Additionally, creating transitions between these periods within individual rooms was essential. As such, AFR played a significant role in the decision-making process and the overall interior design vision.
