Q#4: What figures of speech are used? How do they contribute to the tone and meaning of the poem?

The figures of speech used in this poem include personification and alliteration. In the first stanza, it states, "The Truth's superb surprise." And in the second stanza, it says, "With explanation kind, The Truth must dazzle gradually- Or every man be blind-" This makes the tone seem more symbolic and even foreboding. By capitalizing the first letter of some of these nouns, she adds character to these nonhuman beings and allows them to carry out an essential role in her work. The last line in the final stanza seems more like a warning than a heads-up, firm in belief that knowing the entire truth can ruin people.

Q#6: What is the theme (the central idea) of this poem? Can you state it in a single sentence? Elaborate on your idea.

The theme of this poem is Truth. The speaker of this poem continuously encourages to tell the truth but to tell it slowly. The speaker explains that telling the truth too quickly or directly can become "too bright for [one's] firm Delight" and cause overwhelm. It is also stated in the poem that "success in circuit lies" when one is able, to tell the truth from various angles without overwhelming another person. "The Truth must dazzle gradually," the speaker says so that everyone can take the truth in easily or everyone may become blind to the truth if told directly or NOT told at all. The theme of Truth is more of staying true to a deeper meaning of something and telling it to another person gradually. Therefore, this poem heavily emphasizes the message of bringing out the truth "slantly" and not directly to those who could get blinded.

Q#1: What is the poem’s tone? Which words reveal this tone? Is the poem ironic?

The poem's tone is symbolic and foreboding. The usage of capitalization in the nouns' names gives them character. Words such as "infirm" "dazzle" "superb" are not that commonly used and the way she phrases these words makes the poem seem symbolic. The poem seems more like a vision or divine wisdom rather than an informative opinion poem. The foreboding component comes from the final line "Or every man be blind-". This line makes the author seem to have some form of power or powerful knowledge to warn others. This poem is a little ironic because the actual meaning is "Sugarcoat the truth a little so you don't wreak havoc onto this earth."

Q#2: What heavily connotative words are used? What words have unusual or special meanings? Are any words or phrases repeated? If so, why? Which words do you need to look up?

Despite the poem being short, there are many heavily connotative words such as "Truth," "Delight," "Circuit," and "Lightning." At first glance, they seem like general words that are used in regular writing when in reality, they have a deeper meaning to them. For instance, Truth is repeated three times throughout the poem with a really vague meaning to it. Truth in the poem is described as "too bright for our firm Delight" and a "superb surprise" if told too directly and quickly. The reader could infer that Truth in the poem could mean a deeper or true significance to something serious, but there could be different meanings for this one word. All of the words listed above have some general meanings to them, except for Delight, which is probably defined in the poem as "high gratification or pleasure" in one's being. To find all of the meanings, unusual or unique, I had to look up each of the words above to find out how they were portrayed in the poem.
