Dandara - experience with Bolsa Familia impact on maternal and child health outcomes (childhood and maternal mortality). Interest in heterogeneous effects of social policies;

Ana Moncayo - experience with Bono de Desarollo Humano and child mortality;

Betul Rojeab - policies focused on drug use prevention and gender violence in Ecuador;

Maria Yury - how Bolsa Familia impacts the transmission of STDs (Syphilis in particular, but also HIV-AIDS) and quality of prenatal care;

Denise Pimenta - as an anthropologist, her interests are focused on the impact of social in traditional communities and also the ethical use of personal data for research + public engagement;

Felix Neves - interested in the impact of social policies on the health of quilombolas communities in Brazil;

David Lopes - interested in how people can access and understand information published by scientists;

Joanna Guimaraes - how social policies can help mitigate the detrimental effects of living in poor areas and also mediate the impact of environmental/climate events (especially in vulnerable populations);

Lack of interdisciplinary work - social scientists and classic epidemiology not always connect and share knowledge on different aspects of the study of social policies;

How the communication about social policy happens - sometimes it doesn't reach the population that should benefit from these policies. Public engagement strategies can help empower communities in seeing themselves as the rightful 'owners' of these resources;

How can we evaluate the general knowledge about social policies in the vulnerable communities as this has a great impact in how they feel motivated to participate and advocate for the permanence and maintenance of such policies;

Example: how people felt more or less safe with the COVID vaccines and the SUS in Brazil had a lot to do with how well they knew the Health System and their rights in the first place;

Not a lot of research has been done on this topic

Same as point c. - we all agree that public knowledge and engagement is a relevant research topic;

Effects of climate change on arboviruses, NCD and child and maternal health in vulnerabilizadas/minoritised groups (e.g., indigenous, migrants etc)

Quality of healthcare, its predictors (health professionals, et al) and impacts of health outcomes.

There's a lack of knowledge within the research community about the local production of social policies and this impacts what and how we communicate about their impacts - excess use of international terminology that 'blocks' the communication with the communities and the local stakeholders. Too much ATT/ATE and not enough local knowledge and discussion of these policies in the territories (i.e. the history of these policies, the barriers of access, the people's rights and how they can apply and benefit from these programs);

It is imperative that our methodological and theoretical choices (as SEDHI) prioritize the evidence produced by Brazilian and Ecuadorian scientists and legislators - keep a robust and consistent approach of bridging what is of international interest and what the local communities want to/need to know about the social policies;

When working with social policies, the SEDHI Unit must find a balance between what's of international interest and what's relevant to the local communities and researchers. Less ATT/ATE and more meaningful interpretations of how social policy can promote equity and empower vulnerable populations of their rights.
