First of all i can say we can face some challenges related with the curriculum, not being so flexible. Another thing is related with the space, we need some extra rooms for implementing new ideas.

Our school is open to changes. We are going throw a period of changes: The way to assess is being changed, the curriculum has also been changed...I think in the actual times we are opened to new initiatives and learning objectives.
On the other hand our students are eager to be involved in new initiatives. "Involve me and I'll learn"

To involve the whole community is not as easy as it could sound. Some colleagues or parents still see this kind of matters as a second round topic and prefer to focus in the old curriculum.

I think the main challenge would be lack of interest. The curriculum is rigid, the time is always a problem, but when there is a will there is a way. Sadly, most people do not see this as a personal obligation and think that someone else needs to do the job.

I can see a lot more advantages than challenges. First, the pupils will be very interested and also some of the staff. The school has a good location, especially when it comes to dealing with the eco-goals and when it comes to cooperating with some of the public organizations and private institutions.

I can list the difficulties of establishing an eco-committee in my school as follows:
* The intensive curriculum we apply throughout the school year limits us to spare time for extra activities.
* The small number of willing teachers may increase the workload.
The best way to overcome these difficulties is through good and effective planning. It also makes our job easier to identify a responsible team leader. Strong communication and cooperation between team members makes our work more effective.

The whole school approach for sustainability will be a beautiful learning experience for the entire school community and beyond and can create a new sense of belonging to the school and local community. It also boosts the school ethos and participants will think more globally and act more responsibly. In Germany the curriculum has recently been widened to include 'consumer education' which has to be covered by all subjects. My school has a frequent turn.over of staff, almost a third changes every year, so this could be difficult expecially if one of the temporary teacher is one of those who is really involved in the whole-school project and if you have to trained every year new staff

Taking initiative for sustainability is our moral obligation. Developing joined-up strategic approaches to create long term solutions requires the support of the headteacher, too. If the school board is in favour of changing the school ethos , more options will probably be provided to turn the school into a sustainable one.

There are several challenges to be faced by any initiative aiming to set up whole-school sustainability. Among these are certainly a strict curriculum that is based on discrete subjects and does not favour collaborative and interdisciplinary perspectives as well as limited time in combination with the teachers/students’ burden to cover a demanding and big teaching/learning content . However, in my opinion, the culture of isolation among the members of the school community is the obstacle which is the most difficult to overcome.

Following my post on the previous column i would suggest that setting up a sustainability team in the school has made the difference. It consists of a few members who work together consistently and put into practice sustainability projects.I would say that it looks like the example of Kinsale Community School. These members, teachers and students, set the example and can motivate others and in long term result in transforming the school culture based on sincere communication, collaboration and creativity.

Carrying out a school eco-garden and some projects related to sustainability is difficult to include in the curriculum and programming. And TIME is a factor that works against.
Perhaps with the new Spanish Eucation Law (LOMLOE) we will be able to develop skills, values and attitudes to help young people take an active role in solving problems and protecting the environment, but also upholding human rights and an intercultural education.
On the other hand, to involve other teachers is sometimes more difficult that we can expect.

I think one important advantage is the possibility for teachers to work in a team and to involve our students' parents in the projects we carry out.

It would be hard to do it due to very strict curriculum we have here and most of them is not overlamping thematically. For instance I teach ecology in 1st grade and a collegue teaches about water and pollution in chemistry in 3rd grade. Also we are overloaded wiht things we have to do wiht our students that everything extra is hard to achieve. We try to engage in eTwinning project wiht out students, but the school system here is quite ruthless as kids need to learn 7 subjects every day and have oral exams which are not apointed, like written exams are in most countries. Not to mention students in hugh school here have 17 subjects.

So far, our school has two action groups that have been active for a number of years. One group is focussing on climate change and its risk for our lives. It focusses on options we have at school to give our share in reducing waste and saving resources. The second group focusses on caring for our environment. This group participates in public clean-ups as well as clean-ups on the school ground. There are shared tasks with the climate group. Both groups are guided by teachers, but the organisation and action plans are student-led. The groups are in contact with other student groups in town /at other schools.

The challenges at our school are our strict timetable and strict guidelines for extracurricular activities. Therefore, although SDG goals are already part of several subject curricula, we are still working on the content of one of our school slogans that promotes education for a sustainable future.
Many teachers would like to include the SDG goals in their lesson plans but feel the pressure from the state exams that lead to weird decisions. As excellent students do not need to spend that much time to study for the state exams it is these students that predominantly participate in the SDG-guided extracurricular activities. This is not a bad result in itself but the students that need being convinced most to change their habits is thus excluded.

My school faces the biggest challenge: a cultural fabric imbued with indifference due to a very high percentage of summer residents, who exploit the city without worrying about the consequences. In order for the initiative of the school not to remain an isolated voice in the choir, there should be greater awareness and participation at the Municipal level. Often, however, political interests do not point in the right direction...the risk of a fight against windmills is very high, at least in Italy. But finding a criticality must be a starting point for a transformational attitude towards sustainability, at least for students and school staff.

Since I learned the methodological approach of Service Learning, I have seen significants improvements towards the sustainable attitudes of student: duly motivated, they are able to make a perfect diagnosis and propose adequate suggestions, which they are more willing to follow because they come from them, they are not proposed by the teacher. Izazov prvi bi bio nezainteresovanost nastavnog osoblja. Jedan od ključnih problema kojim sam okružena.
Drugi izazov bi bila sredina u kojoj je škola smještena. Dobar dio stanovništva nema izgrađen odnos prema sredini koja bi trebalo da bude uređena.
Treći izazov bi bio otežavajući odnos sa upravom škole. Ne nailazim na podršku za ekološke akcije. Sve je површно i formalno.

The big advantage is to effectively create full awareness of the importance of sustainability. Fortunately, in my group of schools, the headmaster is very involved and aware of this issue.

We work on eTwinning and Erasmus+ projects with environmental topics such as Food waste. Sustainability, Climate change, Air and water pollution. We also collaborate with volunteering associations that help us to raise awareness among students about these topics. Fo example we usually organise meeting with Plasticfree association. Their volunteers inform and sensitise students with the aim of increasing the awareness that there is no Planet B. Their interventions at school transmit to the students all the necessary notions to make the right choices in compliance with the environment.
