Artist Statement:

When I first started dancing, I could see many of the amazing qualities other dancers had that I didn’t. I was never truly satisfied with how I danced. I was too young at the time to see that the imperfections of dance make the piece special and inspiring. To drive to be greater will only increase your success. Motivated by this realization, I created “Embrace”. Through “Embrace”, I displayed the meaning of embracing your imperfections. Though it might be difficult to let go and not hold back, try to accept your imperfections as they make everyone a unique dancer.

Gracefully Flawed

Artist Statement:

Embracing imperfections and pursuing dreams to the fullest is the essence of “Gracefully Flawed'. Through the fusion of Bharatanatyam (Indian Classical dance) and Jazz, I've discovered that dance transcends all language barriers. Combining two contrasting dance forms and very different music styles is bound to have flaws, yet it brings forth surprising beauty and grace. The dance takes place on the beach, a location symbolizing the meeting of earth and sea, reminding us that imperfection is the foundation of beauty. Blending Bharatanatyam with pop music truly brings out the best of both worlds.

As I played, I thought about how accepting my friends made everything more fun. Soon, it felt warm and happy, like spring. Thorns on a Flower

Artist Statement:

My piece, "Thorns on a flower," is a very new project of mine that creates a certain dark and gloomy atmosphere. I used repetition frequently in the right hand to highlight the contrast of the movement in the left hand's melody. Additionally, I used some dissonance at the top of page 2 to bring deeper meaning to the clarity of the rest of the piece. This relates to the theme, because similarly, without having imperfection (as the dissonance implies), we can't appreciate how hard we strive to achieve something near-perfect.

Relationships often start with fantasy, but then struggle to fully accept both the flaws and the beauty within. "Honest Mistakes" explores moments when we try to change aspects of people in our lives instead of truly seeing them. Drawing from my own experiences and those I've lived through vicariously, this song explores how real understanding comes from accepting both the beautiful and messy parts of who we are. Most people see ordinary drawings in those sketchbooks, I see my thoughts: color and emotion and feeling - everything I cannot speak aloud. This piece “Dominos and Us” is a scene of my baby brother Leon and I playing dominos. After talking to my mom about what accepting imperfection means, I had an idea for a short movie about how to be happy without trying to be perfect. This is my quest to find the best chocolate chip cookie recipe. Here's the recipe.

1 egg, 1 cup brown sugar, 1/2 cup white sugar, 1tsp vanilla extract, 1 cup Salted butter, 2/14 cup flour, 1tsp salt, 1 tsp baking soda, as many chocolate chips as you like.

I tried my best to measure them and follow the instructions. I still think something is missing from this recipe, but I enjoyed eating them with milk anyway.

Pitching Trouble

I love baseball and pitching, but sometimes pitching is hard. That is why I wrote Pitching Trouble. First there is a fastball but it is ball one! Next there is a sinker but it is ball two. Third I have a knuckle ball that is ball three. Finally I throw a curve ball and it is a STRIKE! That made me really happy. That is why the song ends in A Major although it started in a minor. There are good and bad days, like with pitching, but I always work through the hard times and don't get discouraged.

I was going to throw them away, but then I looked at the parts and thought I can make something new. I used all the broken parts and hot glued them together to make a robot centipede. We try to be perfect but life cannot be perfect all the time. Sometimes a little mistake can lead us to new findings and insights. I wrote this essay based on my experience when I had to make a little adjustment due to a mistake I made and eventually ended up submitting an imperfect work in a competition. Highs and Lows is about Imperfection. The most obvious Imperfections are the shifts from major to minor. This shows Imperfection because a perfect song would stay in major. Another place where my song shows Imperfections are the transitions to a different key using five seven chords. The least obvious Imperfection is where two chords that do not belong together resolve into two chords that do. This shows how even though life may seem Imperfect it will often end nicely.

Dance is filled with imperfections. You are continually learning the craft. Ballet in particular has a lot of opportunity for imperfection, especially when you are learning. Dancing on pointe brings this to a new level. And with it, constant room for improvement. I've learned that it is ok to be "perfectly imperfect", and what matters is to enjoy the process and to work hard. Eventually, you realize you won't be perfect, but striving to be perfect is what makes dance beautiful.

A giant sign in my kindergarten teacher’s classroom read, “This is a Mistake Making Place.” Mrs. Tina taught me a lifelong lesson: it’s okay to make mistakes because they push us to try again. I didn’t have to be perfect. I just had to be myself. My composition reflects this lesson through two contrasting themes. The beginning is somber and written in E minor key, representing the embarrassment of making a mistake. Then, the mood shifts to a carefree feeling, expressing the lessons we learn from each mistake and the joy of being immersed in something beautiful.

In the world of cruelty, people tend to try and hide their insecurities, instead of accepting imperfection. In my painting I tried to show the act of “unmasking” the “perfect face”, people try to show in every day life. I was inspired to make this painting through an influencer with vitiligo who was not ashamed of her skin, or any other imperfections. As someone who has been playing piano since childhood, I had to first learn the keys on the piano. Later, I had to learn the keys to success: technique, persistence, and perfection. Slowly, playing the piano became less of a hobby and more of a pressure. I kept trying to play everything perfectly but was missing the key, which was passion. Until a friend in a sunflower shirt told me that I should play from my heart. This piece is dedicated to my younger self to remind myself to not drown in perfection.
