Emily Dickinson was a poet who lived during the 19th century. She had gone to school for only a year and lived most of her life in seclusion and isolation(Emily Dickinson). She met very few people throughout her life, but they all impacted the poems she wrote in one way or another (Emily Dickinson). She was inspired by the works of 17th century poets and her works reflect this (Emily Dickinson). She made a total of over 1,800 poems over her life and they were all compacted into a total of "forty hand-bound volumes" (Emily Dickinson). Her companions were her siblings Austin, who lived next door with his wife Susan, and Lavina, who also lived in seclusion for most of her life similar to Emily (Emily Dickinson).

The poem describes how books can take you to places far away from reality. The theme is that books can be very influential and take you anywhere you want to go. The poem has some similes put in to emphasize the comparison of a book to a frigate train and other objects. "There is no Frigate like a Book" (There is no). This means that a book can be comparable to that of a frigate and how it takes you away: a frigate to another place and a book to the world of literature. Furthermore, the simile strengthens the comparison of a book and a frigate by giving it more emphasis. The meaning of the poem as a whole is that books are a way to take you away from reality and into the places of your imagination. "To take us Lands away" (There is no). This means that books can take you to places "away" from where you are at the time. Emily Dickinson had lived in seclusion and she took an interest to literature (Emily Dickinson, Poetry Foundation).

The poem describes the feeling of success. The theme is that success comes through suffering and hard work. The poem uses metaphors to compare success to something, such as sweetness. "Success is counted sweetest" (Success is counted). This means that success is comparable to something sweet, in any way you interpret it as. In addition, success gives you a feeling of achievement, which can be sweet as well. The meaning of the poem is that success is sweet and is one of the best experiences that someone can have. For example, the poem states that "The distant strains of triumph/ Burst agonized and clear!" (Success is counted). The context of this statement means that those who struggled triumphed and succeeded in the end, meaning that in the end they were successful. In summary, this poem is about the virtues of success and the feeling of achievement and triumph you feel once you achieve it.

"There is no Frigate like a Book" (There is no).
