17. We think it's a very fun scene, but we absolute feel sorry for Chaplin.

18. Because he is not that good at his job, he stands out compare to the other workers.

19. It doesn't have the same effect, when it is a machine talking. Yes we do, we think it would be better if it was from person to person.

20. He destroys the machines, and distracts the machine chief, and he sprays oil at the workers.

21. Sometimes the machines is helping the man, and sometimes they are opponents. An example of a good machine could be the excavator, because it helps the workers dig. We dont think theres is any bad machines, is just how you handle them.

22. Yes we think, because everything you do is now easier and then you have more time for other things.

9.

They are being taken by the police and arrested.

10)

11)

12) Chaplin chose a flock of sheep, because in the Depression everybody acted like animals. Everyone needed a job and a lot of people were poor.

20)
In the movie it comes to show that Chaplin believes that machines only complicates life. In the first part of the movie where they present the employer full belly machine it really shows

21)
Machines are an important part of life, they are created to help humans. They should not be treated as the opponent of us.
An example of a helpfull machine could be something like a defibrillator, wich saves lives. On the other side can machines also be a bad thing, that would be something like a tank that can kill people.

1) Find out what the word humanity means and discuss the meaning of the sentence. Can it be interpreted in more than one way?

By raw translating to Danish, the word means - “Menneskelighed”.

The word itself can be interpreted in different ways:
a. Human beings collectively
b. The state of being human
c. The quality of being humane

The sentence tells about how people thrive to seek happiness through a common mean: work.

2) Which opportunities does the tramp have to achieve life, freedom and happiness?

a. He has the possibility to get a house and family by having a job.

b. He can decide what job he prefers, due to the letter from the prison warden.

c. He can do good deeds to other people to achieve happiness.

3) Make a character sketch of the tramp. What kind of person is he, and what is it he wants to achieve?

He is a somewhat clever person, that realizes prison is a better place to live than outside. He is not afraid to challenge his surroundings and the norm. At the start, he has no goals and does not really care about having a job if he is in prison.

But when he meets the girl, he wants to get a real house and needs to get a job.

4) Write down the various jobs he has during the movie. What is he good at, and what is he bad at? Why does he lose his jobs?

Joblist:
Factory work
Night watchman
Retrieving wedge at a shipyard
Engineering assistant
Entertainer + waiter

He tends to lose his jobs due to being extremely unlucky or taking everything very lightly, you can say he pushes his limits. Every situation that makes him lose his job, are all very unlucky and extreme, which makes it incredibly entertaining to watch.

But the tides turn at his last job being an entertainer where he sings ‘the nonsense-song’. Where he achieved great applause from the audience.

20) How does Chaplin expres his negative view on machines?

Example 1.
The way he expresses his feelings about machines, is expressed very early on where he destroys the big machine at the factory.

Example 2.

He also believes, that machines demand to much of our attention, which makes us forgot other people and ourselves.

Example 3.

The more time the workers spend with the machines, the more machine-alike they become. That is being shown when the factory boss tries to improve lunch eating.

21) In Modern Times it seems as if machines and man are opponents. What do you think? Mention examples of machines that help people and examples of machines that are dangerous for man.

We believe that machines are but a tool. It’s up to whom use it, to put it to good use.

Good use of machines

In the hospital, we put good use to the machines.

Bad use of machines
Nuclear powerplants can we very dangerous for mankind and the environment.

22) Do you think that industrialistion with its inventions and technology has made human beings happier? Substantiate your answer.

The industrialization with its inventions and technology, has made our lives easier. We don’t need that much labor in the production sector, due to the replacing machines.

If machines has made us happier, we can't agree on that.

Discussion points:

1) The word humanity means all of mankind - all humans on earth.

The sentence means that all human beings are looking for happiness. It can also mean that all human being are some kind of “enterprises”, who travels from job to job and home to home.

2) The tramp has an opportunity to archive life, while he knows, that he has to work to earn money to buy food and get a home. An obstacle for him can be, that he can not keep a job, and therefore can’t afford food. In that way he loses his right to live.

The tramp has an opportunity of freedom, while he does whatever he wants. He does a lot of illegal things to get back to jail, where he gets a roof over his head and free food. An obstacle for him can be, that he has to earn money for food and a home, if he is not in jail.

The tramp has an opportunity for happiness, while he is with his girlfriend. He would like to have enough money for food and a home. The obstacle for him, is that he doesn’t like to work, and can’t keep a job.

3) As a person, the tramp is very lazy according to practical stuff. He does not want to work, but wants to be able to afford food and a home. He teases his employees, and likes to make fun of them. The tramp has a lot of energy, when he does something funny. He has a lot of humour, and likes to entertain people. Only a few people understands him, including his girlfriend.

The tramp wants to archive freedom with his girlfriend, food and a happy home. He would like to archive a good life without work and other duties.

4) He did not like to work as a factory worker at an assembly line, while it was too monotonously and too stressful, while he did not get any breaks during the working day.

He were only employed as a helper at a boat-building place by the harper for a very short amount of time, therefore we don’t know, if he liked the job or not.

He liked the job as a night watchman in a store, while his girlfriend were able to sleep in a bed in the store, while he was working. He were also able to do whatever he wanted and have fun with all of the stuff in the store - especialle the roller skates.

He liked being a waiter and singer at a café, while he entertained the guests and made people laugh.

20) He expresses his negative views on machines at the scene, where he is a factory worker at an assembly line. He does that when he stands behind the assembly line, and takes a break for a couple of seconds, and then has to stress even more. The assembly line doesn’t stop, and one of the employees turns up the tempo of the assembly line.

He also expresses his negative views on machines, when he has to eat lunch from the eating machine. The machine is uncontrollable, and is almost burning down.

He also expresses his negative views on machines, when he presses all the buttons on the tempo-machine. This makes the machine burn down.

21) The machines and man are opponents, while the machines takes the jobs from men. The machines also has a shorter lifetime than human beings. On the other hand the machines are more effective and faster than humans, and mankind can therefore produce more.

Elevators and cars help people, while those, who has a hard time going somewhere, can get help to transport themselves. Cars transport people faster.

Many producing-machines replace a lot of jobs for men. The also has a short lifetime.
