         <title>Context Matters</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>As hard as it was to listen to the Queer Television excerpts in module 3, I think that it's bold of Irshad to utilize them as part of an experiential process of learning and reflection. I love how she sets the stage with the students for what they are about to hear, and I also love the message written above the transcript of the Queer television excerpts.&nbsp; It says, "This content comes from Citytv’s “QueerTelevision,” which won the Gemini Award for Best Edited General Information Show.&nbsp;</div><div>It is to be used for educational purposes only within the context of Moral Courage instruction." That context is key-- obviously taken out of context, there would be all sorts of eruptions happening all over the place as a result of a video like that. Her style of facilitation reminds me a lot of what I used to do in Cluett, where a lot of our learning was contextual, and I was asking students to step out of their own shoes for a moment.&nbsp;<br><br>This has me thinking about how we can&nbsp; drastically improve our efforts to "set the stage" in our educational environment and culture.&nbsp; When and where are students receiving the message that they will be valued for who they are, *and* challenged in their beliefs? I think this is a big cultural shift. I also think that experiential learning and PBL play a big role in cultivating the kinds of classrooms where learning can happen across beliefs lines.<br><br>That all said, I ultimately believe that in order to create this cultural shift and develop the context for this learning, the top priority needs to be having a community in which every student feels confident, validated, and supported for the complex people they all are. When that is achieved, the trust is built (trust in the institution and trust in other community members) and healthy risks can be taken.&nbsp;<br><br>-Gemma</div><div><br></div>]]></description>
