My very favorite is "I'm Invited to a Party!" When my son Oliver was around one, I began reading him these stories. I would use a high pitched voice for piggy and a lower, slower voice for elephant. When he began to talk, he would imitate those voices. When he began to read, he asked if he could be "elephant" and I would be "piggy." I was in third grade and my teacher read us "Matilda" by Roald Dahl. She followed that up with a few other Roald Dahl books and I began to search up and check out every Roald Dahl book I could get my hands on. I was adopted at the age of 14. My family connection resides with Gilly in "The Great Gilly Hopkins because she is shuffled to many different foster homes such as I was. Also, Gilly is very angry in the book and by the age of 11, I was very angry for having to grow up in different homes and feeling like I didn't fit in anywhere. This book opened my eyes to racism and took me out of my white privileged shoes for a while into what it meant to be a Black American growing up in the 60's. I grew up in mostly white neighborhoods with other white kids. We had very few minority students in our school. I related to the main character Meg and always having to take care of younger siblings. I was book smart like she is and was fascinated with science and curious about the world and what could be possible. The first time I read the book I did not fully understand it, so I read it again. Then I went on to read the sequels.
