In the clip of "It's a Wonderful Life", the setting is plain. The main character is running through the streets, clearly very happy, but his surroundings are not particularly joyful looking. This creates complexity through the use of opposition, since the characters mood contrasts with his surroundings. In the setting, it is also snowing, which creates a playful, happy mood that mimics the main character. The setting in Jurassic park is almost completely opposite. The swamp and the destroyed, dark environment create a sense of fear and unpleasantness. The rain adds another element of chaos for the characters in the scene. The exclusive use of cool colors is another element that makes the scene feel ominous. The mood created by the setting differs in the two stories, but both create atmospheres that mimic the characters emotions.

"The Martian" clip has a very plain and bland setting. The man is riding around through these dunes that all look the same everywhere you look. This setting reflects the mood of the man. He is very plain and even in his tone it is very flat and emotionless. Where "The Martian" is bland and plain, and "Singing in the Rain is anything but that. In the setting they are in the city where it is raining pretty heavily. The man is still very happy and hopeful. The rain in the city helps add to his playful and joyful mood because he ends up playing in the rain as a child would. These two settings are very different from each other along with the characters within them. Where one is bland and repetitive with no hope for a future the other is full of happiness for the future.

While both settings are during a dark rainy night, other elements of the setting result in two very different moods. Jurassic Park makes viewers feel nervous, on edge, scared, or even grossed out. The mud, screaming kids, and hunting T-Rex create an environment of slowly building suspension to multiple climax points when it appears that one of the protagonists will get mauled and eaten. In contrast, Shawshank's escape is much faster paced and includes sloshing through a ravine in a more heroic light, like the water the character is running through symbolizes overcoming struggles to his redemption and embracing of freedom under the falling rain(the music in Shawshank also helps achieve this mood!). In Jurassic park, escape is made painstakingly slow and suspenseful, as the kids are trapped under the vehicle and then stuck in the mud.

In both "Singing in the Rain" and "Shawshank Redemption" the settings take place when it is raining. In "Singing in the Rain" however, the main character is on a somewhat busy street and is fairly happy. Rain is supposed to give off murky and mysterious feelings, but in this situation the rain adds to the joyousness that the character is feeling. In the "Shawshank Redemption" the character is struggling to escape through pouring rain. He throws his fists up and embraces the rain because he finally overcame a challenge. In both scenarios, the rain symbolizes a positive feeling.

The first clip, Shawshank Redemption, is very dark and hosts heavy rain as the actor flops out of the drain. These dark colors and rain create an intense and negative setting. This causes the audience to feel worry for the character: will he escape the prison successfully? While in the second clip (singing in the rain) it is also raining, the mood of the setting is far different. Rather than an intense scene like the previous video, it revolves around a man high on the feeling of love dancing and smiling despite being in the rain. During the scene, he is seen skipping and dancing around in the poor weather after leaving the home of his love interest. The set is lit despite this rain which is meant to change the mood of the rain away from dark and gloomy and towards hopeful and light. Those around him seem to scurry away and hide from the rain, a heavy contrast from his emotion. This is purposeful, as to show the audience that despite the setting, he is just as giddy. These two contrasting scenes both use rain, but with entirely different effects and reasons.

Since both of the scenes take place in the rain, one would assume they would convey a similar message. However this couldn't be further from the truth. In Jurassic Park the rain is supposed to add a sense of looming danger and chaos to the scene, paired with the children screaming, the t-rex's mouth getting closer to the protagonists, and the darkness that surrounds them. In Singing in the Rain the rain symbolizes pretty much the opposite. Instead of the rain being used as a cover, it's used as clarity, as Gene Kelly realizes he is happy even as the rain surrounds him.

In “Singing in the Rain” and in “It’s a Wonderful Life”, both characters seem to be in a weather situation. Despite the weather conditions, they are both full of energy and it seems like they are living their lives to the fullest. Both remind me of little kids whereas when you are younger, you want to splash around in the puddles, and when it’s Christmas Day, you keep telling everyone and everything that it’s Christmas with excitement in your voice. In “Singing in the Rain” though, you wouldn’t expect someone to have fun when it is pouring down rain. This type of setting shows that even through the darkest of days, to have fun just as the man is doing. In “It’s a Wonderful Life” snowing mostly resembles peace and joy. This setting goes very well with what the man is feeling as opposed to him feeling the opposite like in “Singing in the Rain.” The settings are different, but they both connect back to the feeling of happiness.

In the Martian the lighting and storms that are near him on mars seems to show the danger that surrounds him, that he is having to coexist with. The Jurassic Park scene is more intense because a dinosaur is after them but the scene creates much more especially with the power being out and it raining it allows for more depth into the feeling of being there, while in The Martian is has created more of a soft feeling of being alone and accepting fate, with the setting being him in a large red desert with a sunset that allows for it to be more calming that the Jurassic Park scene.

In "The Sound of Music," the surrounding hills are green and lush, implying it is spring or summer. Spring and summer are used to symbolize youth, adulthood, passion, and freshness. This is true as the character is transitioning from a youthful outlook to a more adultlike outlook on life throughout the song. The mountains in the background symbolize isolation with clarity, as she is singing about the beauty of the hills while they loom in the background. Isolation can also be felt in "The Martian" due to the dry, red, and dull terrain with many jetting, rocky mountains scattered across an otherwise empty landscape. In both clips, the mountains bring a sense of isolation, however in "The Martian" the mountains symbolize death, while in "The Sound of Music" the mountains symbolize life and clarity.

Both of the clips use sound and weather to the fullest, albeit in completely different ways. In "The Martian", the astronaut is depicted traversing across the rocky and dusty landscape of a red planet. The scorching sun and wisps of dust storms present an atmosphere of lifelessness. This emphasizes the point of the scene, which is to illustrate that the astronaut is truly alone. Meanwhile, in "It's a Wonderful Life", harsh weather conditions are also occurring. However, the wintery atmosphere, which typically represents themes of death and harshness, is excepted during the time of Christmas. The bright lights strung around the trees and in the buildings cut through the heavy snow and introduce an element of cozy insulation, heavily contrasting with what is going on outside. "The Martian" and "It's a Wonderful Life" also use the element of music, and this highlights their respective intended purposes.

In both "Shawshank Redemption" and "Jurassic Park" it appears to be nighttime and during a thunderstorm, though the meaning behind the dark weather appears to represent two completely different ideas. In "Shawshank Redemption", a man escapes prison through the sewer pipe, emerging victoriously into a river while rain pours down upon him. This, to me, represents power and accomplishment, as the man basks in the drops of rain and finally rests after climbing through the pipe. "Jurassic Park" uses the darkness of the thunderstorm to represent a whole new meaning. The clip is intended to set an ominous and foreboding tone, as the characters are unsure where their fate lies following a dinosaur attack. The darkness describes a terror and fear in the characters in "Jurassic Park" while in "Shawshank Redemption" it's a symbol of power and pride.

In the Jurassic Park clip, the main emotion that the viewers and characters in the movie feel is fear. While the dinosaur may be to blame, there are a variety of factors that contribute to this sense of fear. The dark, stormy night creates a sense of dread among the characters. The rain adds to that while also creating a sense of potential loss or sadness. In The Martian clip, the man recollects how he is alone on that planet. The emptiness of noise on that planet helps to really push the loneliness feeling and the colors of orange and grey leave more to be desired from the astronaut. Both clips have nature and weather elements that create a sense of emptiness and a sense of the unknown, but only the Jurassic Park clip creates a sense of fear due to the dark nature.

In "The Martian" the landscape is desolate which contributes to a feeling of loneliness. There is not a lot of noise which further adds to the feeling of isolation. In contrast, "It's a Wonderful Life" has a joyful feeling. Despite the cold, dark, and snowy setting, the main character is exuberant. This contrast creates a more nuanced tone. The mood matches the setting more in “The Martian” clip. There are more characters in "It's Wonderful Life" than in "The Martian" creating a sense of community and togetherness. The main character yells to people as he runs through the streets. In “The Martian”, the lack of people adds to the idea of remoteness. While these two settings have moods that are different from each other, both settings reflect the moods of their characters in some way.

In "It's a wonderful life" the setting displays a very chaotic and desolate feel. Everything is whited out and it is dark outside, the constant snow falling out of the sky makes it feel chaotic. In "Singing in the rain" their is a very gloomy atmosphere surrounding the time of day and the weather. It is absolutely pouring rain outside people are running off the streets left and right, It is dark outside only illuminated by the artificial structures. However these two clips have one thing directly in common, and that would be the exuberant, overexcited main character. In singing in the rain no matter the pouring rain he kept singing and dancing around carelessly and blissfully.

Its a Wonderful Life has a calm but loud setting . The video is in black and white creating a feeling of calmness . It is Christmas time and snowing all around . The snow is slow and very calming but the characters in the video make it loud and busy . The Sound of Music has an undisturbed feeling and a very peaceful setting . The character in the video is singing and song that has a sad melody but the song itself is a vibe of tranquility . The setting the character is in is the outside nature, beautiful and full of peaceful wind and sunshine . The characters in both clips are different . One is calm and singing , the other is ecstatic and shouting . Both setting are very unsimilalar . Its a Wonderful Life is snowing and very dark, when The Sound of Music is bright and full of sunshine . Both clips bring a different feeling to the audience and produce very different settings .

Jurassic Park" is set in a warm and humid climate with heavy rainfall. The characters running away from the dinosaurs creates an element of adrenaline that the viewer experiences as well. The dark background gives the movie a which radiates the element of mystery and suspense. "Singing in the Rain" contrasts the adrenaline element with joy and excitement. The clip takes place in a similar climate as "Jurassic Park" but the mood of the main character gives it a different disposition. He is seen singing and jumping for joy after he has interacted with the love interest. The rain does not seem to matter to him.

The major similarities and differences between these two clips can be noted in the weather of the settings. The scene in "Jurassic Park" is filled with the tone of terror. The bad weather of the rain suggests the overall theme of the movie "Anything that can go wrong, will go wrong". When the T-rex escapes the rain clouds and sky and makes it impossible for the cars to escape due to the mud. The mortal terror and the moodiness of the rain invoke fear in the minds of the audience.

In the "Shawshank Redemption" however the rain represents an entirely different feeling. Triumph and overcoming difficulty are phrases that come to mind when describing this scene, and the music adds to this feeling. The character's success at overcoming the oppressiveness of Shawshank prison is symbolized in his joy at the feel of the rain, a weather that is typically disliked.

The contrasting effects of rain highlight the ability of scenes to manipulate tone with the same settings.

In these two stories, there were major differences regarding the setting and the mood it created. The scene in "Singing in the Rain" was portrayed outside this apartment building on a dark rainy night. Now in a way, one would think of these nights as gloomy and dreadful, but the scene used it as a cleansing, free and happy moment. When he starts tap dancing without his umbrella, it portrays a carefree and happy attitude of the character that the rain brought to him. In the scene of "Jurassic Park," the rain brings a terror and suspicious type of fear. When the two children were in the car, about to get stomped on, the audience sat in terror with that added element of the rain. The darkness and the rain bring a sense of the unknown which makes us suspicious. The two stories have similar settings, but the mood carried with them is very much different.

Although it is raining in the clip of Singing In The Rain, the mood is not gloomy or depressed. The rain counteracts to the mood of the main character. The main character is joyful, and doesnt let the rain affect his mood. While in Jurassic Park the rain only adds to intensify the mood. The rain in this clip helps express the mood, as well as the surrounding setting. Such as the dinosaur trying to eat them and them getting stuck in the car with mud seeping in. The rain in this clip brings a sense of horror and fear, where compared to Singing In The Rain it brings a sense of contemptment and joyfulness.

Comparing these two films having one huge thing in common is the weather, but standing as two different meanings. As we see in "Jurassic Park" , the scene is infused with fear because the goal in this scene is to save the children from the T-rex. The rain displays an ominous or blood-curdling mood which makes it difficult for the characters to save the children quickly, this induces thrill and suspense for the viewers.

In this scene from "Shawshank Redemption" we see the rain given as a victory from the character when he rips his shirt and thrusts his fists in the air victoriously to feel the rain because he finally overcame the difficulties of escaping the inescapable prison. The contrast of these two scenes tells us that the mood can be different with the same setting.

The greatest similarity that the two clips share in my opinion, is a setting that promotes a strong natural sense of fear coupled with the characters' knowledge of what's at hand.
In "Jurassic Park" the setting is a dense rain forest at night while it is storming. This perfectly sets up the mood that is stress and unknowing; the root of fear. The Character Alan Grant played by Sam Neill wonderfully portrays the emotion of fear due to the immense danger, but he also has the understanding to get out of the situation. In the clip from "The Martian" Mark Watney has to travel a long distance to a future landing zone to ensure his survival with existing resources. The scene, like in "Jurassic Park", shows the rough terrain that has to be traversed safely. It is the incredible danger and handling of fear that is shared that makes these scenes so similar.
In contrast, the setting of "The Martian" allows for more of a hopeful mood. It is a bright day with a constant reach for hope rather than the impending doom that the setting of "Jurassic Park" makes the potential viewer feel.

Shawshank redemption the dark night and pouring rain set a sorrowful mood. The Sound of Music was bright, colorful, flowing hills and fields, a mountain range, along with an upbeat performance. Shawshank the man was fighting through the water thrashing around his arms and moving his legs frantically to escape. While the lady in The Sound of Music sings beautifully dancing around, gently touches a tree, then prances over and around the little stream --still singing. (Shawshank) When the man in the runoff water gets his feet under him, he’s still frantic letting his limbs fly, and he walks down the stream; to then rip off his shirts violently. The rain still poured down over the scene as the man looked up into the moonlight shirtless with weak heavy arms. As he catches his breath after the violent affair he finds the strength to raise his arms as a celebration of freedom. He triumphed over nature and man. The Sound of Music uses its setting and song to show her bliss over nature. She is brighter than the green of grass; even though it is gloomy she shines like the sun and inspires a feeling of cheerfulness.

The setting of Jurassic park creates a sense of fear of impending doom, uncertainty, and potential danger. The rain, dark sky, and dense forests reduces visibility and gives suspense that something might be lurking in the woods. As the situation gets more intense with the dinosaur attacking the children the weather gets more aggressive with more rain and thunder. With all the rain there formed as sinkhole, and as the dinosaur tried to crush the car the children came closer to drowning in the sink hole.

The Setting of The Sound of Music highly contrasts with that of Jurassic park since it is a more bright setting, much more calm, rolling hills, partially cloudy sky hinting at a gentle breeze. There is a small river with shallow waves. There was also a scene with some woods but there was light peeking in through the branches of the trees. While Jurassic park was a more fearsome, suspenseful, setting involving life and death, The Sound of Music involved a more Joyous, uplifting, setting with a peaceful landscape and gentle breeze.

Between the two clips, we see vast land, large hills and mountains, and our main character seeming small in comparison to to it. However, while "The Sound of Music" makes the vast hills feel freeing, "The Martian" makes them feel lonely. In "The Sound of Music" there's beautiful rivers, green grass that almost looks unreal, and the scenery overall looks like something out of a Bob Ross painting. The weather is perfect; it's sunny with enough clouds to get shade in if it were hot. Going by what the main character is wearing, we can deduce that it must be good weather, not hot, but not frigid either. But most of all, the big hills behind the woman singing, her muse, are seemingly endless. It feels like a breath of fresh air, absolutely freeing, or like when you pick he perfect spot for a picnic. In stark contrast, "The Martian" features mainly dusty reds and orange, and the red mist makes it clear that there is so much loose terrain that the air is grainy. When the character says that he is the first to walk these lands, it's almost as if the setting says that for us. Even without knowing that he's walking on Mars, it feels desolate and empty, and the endless mountains feel foreboding rather than freeing or comforting.
