Rationale:
I chose this topic because keeping students' confidentiality is essential for building trust, but there are times when ensuring safety requires counselors to make difficult ethical and legal decisions. This is one of the biggest challenges school counselors face in their work.

At the federal level, the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) gives counselors a plan to follow. This plan helps counselors support students with their education, careers, and emotions (ASCA, 2016).

At the state level, each state has its own rules. In Texas, the Texas Education Agency (TEA) makes sure school counselors meet the requirements to work. TEA also checks that counselors follow the laws and do their job the right way (Texas Education Agency, 2024).
