In Social Work , cultural humility plays a vital part in the practice of working with different clients on an everyday basis. As social workers it is important that you focus on access, diversity, equity and inclusion to create a successful relationship with different clients. You must be able to adapt and find out what works for you and your client to insure that they are able to obtain the resources that they need, “To promote meaningful change, social workers must adopt alternative language and solutions that address the systemic issues underlying racism, oppression, and privilege” (Wright, 2023).

Challenges and Barriers

With cultural humility it is important that professionals are able to put their biases aside when dealing with patients. This may cause challenges and barriers for some professionals because they are unable to set aside the beliefs that they already have about one person or a group of people. “Cultural humility involves understanding the complexity of identities — that even in sameness there is difference” (Shamaila Khan, 2024). When working with clients they often come from different backgrounds and need different resources, if they are dealing with a social worker who thinks negatively about them because they are biased it can hinder that individual from getting the help that is needed. This causes issues on the professional and clients side, there is a complex within everyone’s identity and in order to treat everyone with the same respect you must be able to acknowledge those differences and the changing dynamics that come with it.

Initiatives and Resources

To ensure that the practice of Cultural Humility is being applied in the work space as a social worker there are many initiatives and resources available. Individuals can complete assessments and checklists that allow them to determine if their humility in culture has been developed, there are also readings and videos available to educate those who need to enhance their cultural humility. Some companies may also provide their own trainings and webinar series to their staff and other individuals in need of education on what cultural humility is and how beneficial it can be in your personal and work life.

In order to uplift the communities we are in we must engage in others cultures and be mindful to advocate for those who cant do so for themselves. We must reflect, understand and challenge the bias values that negatively view others and their communities so we can continue to make a lasting impact and build our communities.
