He is driving his car in Bemidji, Minnesota, at the end of august. Towards the international fall, along the Rainy River that separates Minnesota and Canada. He spends night the in his car behind a closed-down gas station in Minnesota, half a mile from the border to Canada. He looks out in the wilderness and passes by a motel and a bait shop, and the unfolded country filled with pine and birch sumac. Piles of yellow and red leaves are laying around the unfolded countryside. Though it's still august, he tells that it feels like fall, and that he almost can smell october, football season. Everything was crisp and clean, the sky was blue. He pulled into a old fishing resort in Minnesota called the Tip Top Lodge, and he tells it wasn't lodge at all, just eight or nine tiny yellow cabins clustered on a peninsula that jutted northward into the rainy river. The place was a sorry place, he wasn't surprised. There was a dangerous wooden dock an old minnow tank, a flimsy tar paper boathouse along the shore. The main building, which stood in a cluster of pineson high ground, seemed to lean heavily to one side, like a cripple, the roof sagging toward Canada. Tourist season was over, and there were no boats on the river, and the wilderness seemed to withdraw into great permanent stillness.

He passes through Bimidji, International Falls, a closed down gas station, a motel and a bait shop and drives along Rainy River. It takes a time span of 24 hours.
His urgency is displayed heavily in the descriptions of the feeling of being inside his car in the beginning of the paragraph and the time passes by fast just like his inner thoughts.
Just like his mental state he is physically further and further driving into the wilderness, between two possible life choices shown as the edge between Minnesota and Canada, represented by Rainy River.
In the wilderness he finds a calm place, he finds a place to relax and focus in his mind that is otherwise in great conflict. The Tip Top Lodge is a place the protagonist escapes to to run from his troubles but it keeps reminding him of the fact that its only a temporary sanctuary.

The description of the area is unpeopled rawness and woodlands. The point of no return is when Tim have to choose if he goes to Canada or not. The moment of the decision is very tense. Tim looks to the past and the future. The atmosphere is tense, because of battle inside Tim. The lack of conversation makes it easier for Tim, because he doesn’t need to explain himself. During the times when Tim and Elroy are together he makes the surroundings brighter, everything seems happier.
