The Spaniards suspected that their kindness was not genuine, but continued to follow. When they reached land, the Mayans attacked them and a fight took place, because of that the Spanish returned to Cuba.

This is important because the Spaniards went to the Yucatan peninsula, but were already close in Ajaruco, which was 30km from Havana, Cuba. As they went further inland, they made friends with many of the indigenous who wanted to overthrow the empire. Emperor Moctezuma,  in Tenochtitlan, was cautious when meeting the Spanish and tried to give them gifts to get them to leave, which did not work. As a result, in 1521 after having war for two years the Spanish took over.

This is important because it is surprising that many of the natives wanted to overthrow their empire. Creoles that were upset because they were born of Spanish decent and were not able to participate in their government, freedom of press, etc. As a result, a group of   Creoles declared the independence of Mexico, and there were years of battle between the Creoles and Spanish. Until finally in 1821, Span recognized Mexico as independent under the Plan of Iguala.

This is important because the Hispanic Americans were already tired of being ruled over by Spain. The republic included the region of the American Southwest and Central American countries. Because nobody lived in the state of Texas, the Mexican government invited Americans to lived there under the conditions that no slaves were brought, they learned to speak Spanish, and for them to be Catholic.
Then in the mid-1930s, President Antonio Lopez de Santa Ana adopted a centralist government. Which caused discontent in the territories like Yucatan or Texas, since restrictions were on settlers.

This is important because of the change of government and how that affect people that lived in Mexico and the territories. From there Mexico tried to regain the Republic of Texas many times in 1836 through 1845. But in 1848, the US annexed Texas, and that is were issues about the border started, and started a war between Mexico and the US. They had the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo where Mexico could keep the rest of their territories, but in the end sold them to the US for 50 million dollars.

This is important because we see how the border dispute started, because of Texas declaring its independence. General Porfirio Diaz was against reelection tried to rise up but was defeated, but rose again when Juarez's successor came and was successful then. Porfirio was a for his reelection, then came the time of the Diaz dictatorship, which was good for the country, but not many people. His reign was benefitting foreigners and Mexican elite, but the other Mexicans faced poverty and repression.

This is important because Diaz was only for reelection when it came to himself, and ruled for a long time. But because there was a lot of violence when doing that many people left the country and went to the US. During that there was lots instability. The a new Constitution of Mexico was made in 1917. The revolution finally ended in 1920.

This was important because they were fighting to get rid of the rule that Diaz had. Presidential Candidate Luis Donaldo Colosio was assassinated, that crime compares to wanting to assassinate John F. Kennedy in the US. The Free trade Agreement(NAFTA) was put into effect, Jan. 1, 1994, which took away trade barriers between the US, Canada, and Mexico. Also on Jan. 1, 1994, the Zapatista Army of National Liberation, took arms and fought for the rights of the indigenous people in the southwestern part of Mexico.

This is important because someone was assassinated and the rights of the indigenous had to be fought for.
