How can we get this message across to parents? I feel that I'm in a tough position as a special ed teacher. Parents' first reaction is always to advocate for their children when instead they should be teaching their children to advocate for themselves, especially at the middle school level. I spend a lot of effort and energy on teaching self-advocacy skills just to be overshadowed by parents. It really stood out to me when they said most bulldozing, snow plow, or helicopter parents know what they're doing is problematic but, because of peer pressure, anxiety,  or privilege they do it anyway to know that your child will be successful.
