- 2 zone dell'Antipurgatorio (anime non ancora ammesse all'espiazione);
- 7 cornici del Purgatorio (superbi, invidiosi, iracondi, accidiosi, avari e prodighi, golosi, lussuriosi e sodomiti)
- il Paradiso Terrestre (anime che hanno compiuto l'espiazione).

Il custode del Purgatorio è Catone l'Uticense, scelto a simboleggiare il valore della libertà morale.

Le anime del Purgatorio sono già salve ma devono purificarsi ed espiare i propri peccati per poter giungere al Paradiso Terrestre.
