Typically bachata consists of seven instruments. It consists of a lead guitar, rhythm guitar, electric guitar, guitar, bass guitar, bongos and güira. There is also different types of bachata which require different instruments. The musicians may switch the bongos to a tambora drum. During the 1960-1970 maracas were used less and they started incorporating the güiria. The implement of the maracas came in after bachata became more dance oriented.

They express feelings such as joy, pain and suffering through music. This started off as a culture in the countryside of the Dominican Republic. Today people see bachata as a music of feeling.

Bachata was recorded right after the death of their Dominican dictator. In 1970 bachata was not played as much. But in the early 1980's, bachata regained it's popularity. Bachata was heard everywhere in radios, television and dance halls. By the 90's, bachata became dominated by two new stars. The newly musicians created a new style of bachata. They were the new pop-bachata generation. During this time bachata became more international. Bachata was illegal due to the vulgar and sensual dance involved with it. It has evolved with time by becoming more international, becoming socially acceptable and incorporating new elements.
