By Tamara Alcindor - 8SLL

A Christmas Carol (1999) is a film adaptation of the famous book written by Charles Dickens in 1843.

This film is about and old miser named Ebeneezer Scrooge owns a business which he used to share with his business partner Jacob Marley, who is now dead. One day, his nephew Fred pays a visit to his Uncle, who tells Fred that Christmas is Humbug.
In his sleep that same night (on Christmas Eve) is visited by the Ghosts of Jacob Marley, Christmas Past, Christmas Present and Christmas Future.

This piece represents the 19th Century well because at one point in the film, S is asked to give a donation to charity but refuses. This shows the selfishness and greed of the wealthy in Victorian London. Also, in the film, two children called Ignorance and Want represent the poor and the homeless. Scrooge thinks that it is none of his responsibility to look after children, however the Ghost of Christmas Present says that "the children are the responsibility of all mankind".

Christina Rossetti wrote the poem -Echo- to show her grieve and longing for her loved dead one. She shows it as a Gothic poem.
It is a haunting lyric poem.
Christina uses the idea of dreams in her poem to take her poem out of reality; in the poem she is talking about dreams and how it causes pain but she wants more, to represent her grief of her loss.

Christina Rossetti's poetry represents the 19th century. As she bases the fact that there were complicated views on suffrage and equality. At times she used the Biblical idea of woman’s subordination to man. While at others she argued for female representation in Parliament and spoke out against the sexual exploitation of women in prostitution.

For example this is to represent grief:
"Come back in tears,
O memory, hope and love of finished years."
"Come with soft rounded cheeks and eyes as bright
As sunlight on a stream;"
It shows how it's a nightmare to remember the dead loved one, but at the same time how she wants it to continue, so she doesn't forget.

Charles Dickens wrote Great Expectations to show what occasionally happened in the 19th century. It is not only a book but also a film.

It's about a boy named pip who lives with his abusive sister and her husband. Pip meets an escaped convict in the graveyard of a church, when he is visiting his parents graves.

This novel tells us what used to happen in the eighteen hundreds. It tells us that there were often children without parents, living with other family members, or living in an orphanage, or living alone; these children could easily be taken by someone, or forced to work for people. This is shown when it says in the book 'While exploring in the churchyard near the tombstones of his parents, Pip is accosted by an escaped convict. The convict scares Pip into stealing food for him'.

This was Charles Dickens' last book because it was unfinished by the time of his death. Although the story is name after the character Edwin it manly talks about his uncle who is an addict (John Jasper) and has fallen in love with his pupil Rosa Bud. Ms Bud-Drood's fiance had found an interest in Neville Landless. Naturally Drood develops a hatred towards Landless and later mysteriously dissapears.

How does this represent the 19th century?

In the story it represents the 19th century well because Scrooge plays a character of a greedy and selfish man and the masters had the same characteristics in workhouses in those times. Dickens felt strongly that Victorian society ignored the poverty of its underclass. On the one hand were the rich who enjoyed comfort and feasting at Christmas, and on the other were children forced to live in dreadful conditions in workhouses.
