         <description><![CDATA[<div>The purpose of an editorial is to assert an opinion on a divisive situation or topic of discussion. Typically these editorials relate to current events and take a side one way or another. <br>1. Ethos, pathos, and logos- the author uses each of these audience appeals to persuade the audience of their merit. <br>2. Call to action- editorials encourage the audience to make a change. <br>3. Counter argument- each side of a topic is addressed with one side proving more credibility over the other. <br>4. Rhetorical devices- strengthen the purpose, audience, claim, or tone. <br>5. Clear claim- the author’s opinion is clearly stated and cannot be  disputed. <br><br></div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Editorials are written to incite some change in society through the sharing of an opinion. Most articles write with the opposition as their intended audience; if they can change someone else’s mind, then they have achieved their purpose. However, people do not simply change their mind. They get stuck in their own opinions, and hearing an argument reinforces their own beliefs. An effective editorial takes the opposite approach. They write to those with similar opinions with the intention of unifying a group with a singular goal, and united, they can make real change. Individually, people are weak, but united, they can accomplish great things. <br><br>Writing to unify rather than divide requires an empowering tone rather than a hostile one. Writing to lift others up to their beliefs rather than put the opposition down can build unification towards the intended purpose. A strong call to action that supports the beliefs of the Editorial without discrediting opposing beliefs unifies people without discouraging people with contrasting beliefs. As a result, when met with a unified force, the opposition will not immediately shut out those opinions because they were hurt in the past. They will be able to maintain an open mind and welcome respectful debate, because they were given that courtesy in the past. Finally, an effective editorial is open to other ideas. If it expects to change other’s beliefs, then the author must be open to other ideas as well. Maintaining this perspective fosters lively debate rather than hostile aggravation, and anger yields immovable beliefs. </div>]]></description>
