The Spanish government had given Missouri merchant Moses Austin permission to start a colony in Texas, believing that more settlers would help stabilize a border area that was far from the population centers of either exico or the United States. Then in 1821 Moses's son, Stephen F. Austin rode into Texas to build the new settlement. A month later, Austin and his party learned that Mexico had won it's independence.

On the american frontier evangelical denominations sent missionary preachers and exhorts out to the people in the back country, which supported the growth of membership among Methodist and Baptist. These denominations were based on an interpretation of man's spiritual equality before God, which led them to recruit members and preachers from a wide range of classes and all races. Baptists and Methodist revivals were successful in some parts of the Tidewater in the South, where an increasing number of common planters, plain folk, and slaves were converted.
