Carol Ann Duffy's adult life is quite simple, today she is the first woman laureate person chosen in the 21st century. And

she won the T.S Elliot prize for her love poems. Later on, in 1999, she was considered for the high position of poet laureate. Carol was named an officer of the order of the British Empire in 1995 and in 2002 she was named a dame commander of the British Empire. She got her education from Liverpool University and she graduated with a degree in 1977, she then went on to publish several books and she traveled to read and teach her poetry to others. Lastly, she worked as a poetry critic for The Guardian from 1988 to 1929, and shortly after that she became an editor for the poetry magazine called the Ambit.

Carol Ann Duffy’s work has been received as too populist however, her work as a whole is very acclaimed for being literary as well as accessible, and she is known for writing about gender, oppression, social inequality, and alienation. Duffy's work is highly recognized for being literary and accessible. Her work received numerous awards such as the Scottish Arts Council Award and the T.S. Elliot Prize. To ass on Duffy made it clear in many interviews that she had agreed to become poet laureate only because it was inception during the 17th century which no other woman had held the post for that. A lot of Duffy's work reflects features from the Liverpool poets. An example of this would be her use of pacey and impactful rhythms, she also uses a lot of dramatic monologues which further intrigues her readers.

Some topics that she writes about are about queer love, she is also a strong believer on feminism, her writing form is classical but her technique is razor sharp. She also writes about anthologies. Some other themes she writes about are language and the representation of reality, and the construction of the self. According to “British Council Literature” she writes everyday using very conversational language which makes her poems appear simple but also insightful. She also believes that their is an important of childhood memories and experiences and she thinks that they shape who we are today and they do have a significant impact of how we are going to change as people further on in the future.
