Self-awareness Section:

For my self awareness section I received a score of 43 which is considered a strength of mine. My reaction towards this score is that I have improved a lot since I was little. I remember being selfish as a child. My parents had several talks with me and told me that I had to be considerate of others and their feelings. As I started to grow up I realized that self awareness is very important because I don't want to hurt others with my opinion. I have learned that stating my opinion is very important, but there are some things that should be kept to discretion to not hurt others. As a future teacher I believe that self awareness is key in the classroom. I want to make sure that my students value who they are and accept themselves. But, I also want to make sure that they value the opinions and abilities of others. No one should ever believe they are better or inferior than anyone else.

Managing emotions:

For managing emotions I received a score of 27 which is considered a weakness that I have to pay attention to. My reaction towards this score was very expected. I come from a family that has a very short temper. I consider myself someone responsible and I stick to my word. For example, when I work in group projects I believe it is everyone's responsibility to contribute to the group project. But, there are times in which students do not do their work and this makes me very upset. When I am upset there are times that it is very hard for me to forget about the situation or change my mood. I am what people call an "open book", which means that people can read what emotion I have. My plan is to work towards controlling my emotions. I need to stop overthinking situations and find things that distract me or make me feel better in a situation like this. I need to learn how to control my emotions and rather find a solution. If there have been any confrontations with anyone, then maybe I will talk to them and fix things with that individual. I am very thankful for my family and friends who have helped me and have been a support system when I need to manage my emotions.

Motivating oneself:

For motivating oneself I received a score of 42 which is another strength of mine. My reaction towards this score is that I like to motivate myself, my family, and my friends. I have been told that I am very wise. My friends tend to come to me for advice and a lot of the time my friends mention that they are stressed about school. What I always tell my friends is that although we are tired because we have obligations, jobs, homework, and school, we have gone through so much to get to where we are. We have accomplished getting through high school and proving to everyone that we are not another stereotype of students who do not graduate high school. I motivate them and myself by talking about the rewards that life holds for all of us. For example, we will graduate from college, we will have our dream job, and soon we will all start a family. I always tell my friends and myself that although it may not be easy to get there and we may have to change our paths, we will all get there. I plan to keep motivating myself and others, knowing that my hard work will pay off and my dreams will come true. I plan to always motivate my students to push themselves and achieve their goals. I want them to learn from my mistakes, their mistakes, and the mistakes that others have done. But, I want them to use it as an excuse to motivate themselves and be a better version of themselves. There may be times when my students will want to give up because they may not have the opportunities that other students have, but I will motivate them to keep pushing themselves until they achieve their goals.

Empathy:

For empathy I received a score of 40 which is another strength of mine. My reaction to this score has been joy, thankfulness, and happiness. I am thankful for those who have showed me and told me about their life, present, and future. Everytime I meet someone new I learn something new from each individual. Having empathy means that you put yourself in the shoes of others, but that doesn't necessarily mean that your experiences have to necessarily come from you. It can be from experiences that others have told you, of those you have heard in the news or in documentaries, or of loved ones. Having empathy for someone does not mean that you have compassion for that person, rather you show that person that you are a helping hand and that if they ever need you, you will be there for them. My plan is to never lose my strength of empathy. As a future teacher, I will gain more empathy towards my students. Depending in which school I am placed I might have to see students who live in poverty, who are surrounded by drugs or gangs, who have gone through the death or abandonment of one or many of their family members, or students who are homeless. These are situations that I have never lived through but I have to show empathy towards my students because regardless of any situation they may be going through, my ultimate goal is for them to feel safe and cared for.

Social Skill:

For social skill I received a score of 39. My reaction to this score was a little bit of laughter because to this day I still love to talk. Ever since I was little I loved to talk and make friends. I remember every time my parents and I went to parent teacher conferences and the teacher mentioned that I loved to talk in class. I also like to take initiative whenever there is a group project. I like to check up on my teammates and ask them how they are doing and if they have any questions regarding the assignment. I believe that teamwork is very beneficial because in a group there will be more ideas to choose from. Not to mention that working in groups opens many opportunities to meet new people and create amazing friendship bonds. I plan to grow stronger in social skills by getting to know more people in my classes. The class that I am most comfortable has been my Education class. I am very excited to get to know all of the Education majors and create amazing bonds, as well as work with all of them. As Education majors I believe we should all stick together.

Perception and importance in my life:

My perception of EQ is that I have to be very considerate of my emotions and how they affect others around me. A lot of the time I don't focus on myself and I don't stop to think who I've become, how I have grown as a person, or who I want to become. I have gotten to a point in my life were I accept who I am and I like who I am. But, that does not mean that I have to stop learning and growing as a person. I believe that as I grow older and I graduate college I will know much more than what I originally knew in the beginning. I have recently realized that college has opened my eyes and I have a different perspective of many things. I truly believe that once I graduate college and start a new life including a family, the way I think will also change. I believe that change is good. I believe change is what makes a more open minded person and we should not be afraid of it. I am excited to see the improvement I will make from now on and how it will affect my life moving forward.

Lily...what an enjoyable reading experience your blog has been! You are a teacher! You are empathetic, you have excellent social skills, are empathetic and are a person who cares and wants to motivate others. Your future students will benefit immensely from having you as their guide/teacher/advocate! They will know that you are a teacher they can open up and talk to. In my years of teaching at the high school level, the times students reached out and I was able to help them were some of the most meaningful!
Didn't you love reading Mrs. B.'s Classroom! It is a book with a lot of insights for future teachers to learn from! Also, it was positive that you feel it is important to be close and supportive of other education majors...teachers are great supports for each other!
I noted a couple of grammar errors: open book," (comma inside (); "instead" vs. "rather" (Managing section); and "talk in class..." an incomplete sentence (social skill section) I didn't see that you addressed the final question about your perception of EQ...I would have liked to hear your thinking on this.... +8.5
