Women have always been classified as less superior than men. For centuries, they have always been told they were less ambitious and courageous than men. Settling down with a man and developing a family was the ideal life for many women. They were always told by society that their role was to raise a child, clean, cook, and look pretty. Marriages were very one-sided. The duties of a wife were designed to benefit the man. While the men were off doing the "dirty" work, gaining money to support their family, the women were always expected to manage household affairs. Thus the term housewife came to be. A stay at home wife or mother is something that is very emotionally damaging, but many are still forced into that lifestyle in modern society. Marriages can be very restricting to women because they are being controlled by their significant other, slowly losing the ability to make choices for themselves. In Othello, Iago is one of the heavy influences of the stereotypical women roles. He believes women are purely for entertainment purposes. After Iago uses Emilia to help with his mischievous plan, during the final scenes, Emilia is seen to be an independent and fearless woman who speaks her mind. This is similar to the development of women in modern society. Women are slowly regaining the freedom they have lost for many years. Most countries today find it socially acceptable for the woman in a relationship to work as well. It is still a topic that needs improvement and more recognition as many still hold the stereotypes of women. It is unfortunate that men still cannot grasp the idea that women can do the same tasks as men just as efficiently.

Emilia is Iago's significant other. She is someone whom he expects to always support him. Emilia resembles a puppet that is controlled by Iago. This is shown when Emilia said, "My wayward husband hath a hundred time wooed me to steal it, but she so loves the token" (III.iii.300). Throughout the text, she is seen as a loyal person to her dear friend Desdemona and her husband, Iago. Although her husband is very disrespectful towards her and is verbally abusive, she still listens to him. It convinces the reader that Emilia cannot make her own decisions and will agree with Iago no matter how cruel his intentions are. This is proven incorrect in the last act, as her character develops into a very observant, smart, and kind-hearted person. She was able to defend and justify that Desdemona was an honest person when she speaks up to Othello and says, "Oh, the more angel she, And you the blacker devil!" (V.ii.145). She then betrays her significant other and claims to hate her husband as she states, "If he say so, may his pernicious soul Rot half a grain a day! He lies to th' heart. She was too fond of her most filthy bargain." (V.ii.166). This was all done to show her loyalty towards Desdemona. Overall, she is a strong woman who was not afraid of anyone and does not even fear death because she was able to denounce Iago's lies to save Dedemona's reputation.

"Make the Moor thank me, love me, and reward me for making him egregiously an ass" (II.i.13). The quote is a reminder of Iago's plan because throughout the story he seems to act innocent and clueless. This is a foreshadow of the chaos that will happen during the text, and will later lead to the climax. It shows the character development of Iago, and his true intentions to bring harm to others.

Throughout the text, loyalty seems to show through Cassio, Desdemona, and Emilia, whereas betrayal was obvious in Othello and Iago. It is a balance of both traits as the text ends with a plot twist since Emilia betrays Iago to stay loyal to Desdemona. This shows how the truth always makes it's way out, and how karma/punishment exists. It is a chaotic mix of emotions due to Iago's manipulation, causing everyone to question who they can trust.

Peer pressure and manipulation is something that everyone faces every day, especially for women. Society expects us to just sit there and look pretty for others, and the men will take care of the heavy duties. Women are easier to manipulate in workplaces, relationships, and e.t.c. They are deemed lower than men and have always been struggling in big industries as people do not like to grow as a society and accept equality. As a female, I fear big industries as I will not be taken seriously or will not be accepted for my gender. Why else do you think most of the world leaders are men?

This is a quote that shows Desdemona as someone who is truly in love and will be loyal towards Othello no matter what. After Othello betrayed her and lost his trust towards her, Desdemona still loved him. After finding out his wife was innocent, he then killed himself. Their marriage, love, and loyalty, is what lead them to each other's deaths. They loved one another too much to the point where they thought death was the best option, resulting in a tragedy.

It is clear to the audience that Iago is a bad character as his plans and intentions are introduced in the first act. In the text, Iago says, "And practicing upon his peace and quiet Even to madness. 'Tis here, but yet confused. Knavery’s plain face is never seen till used" (II.i.235). He explains his goal is to create a plan for revenge on Cassio and Othello. As the audience continues to read, it is obvious that Cassio and Othello still see Iago as a trustworthy buddy because Iago continues to feed them lies that create paranoia, or what others assume is advice. In reality, he is plotting against them. In addition, there is also irony with Emilia as she has been listening to Iago with the unknown knowledge that he is plotting against Desdemona, Cassio, and Othello. She gives the handkerchief to Iago with no clue of what his actions are, but the audience knows he is planning to use it to frame Cassio for sleeping with Othello's wife.
