The chapter begins with Scout and Jem discovering small gifts in the knothole of a tree near the Radley house. They find two polished Indian-head pennies, which they consider treasures. However, they are puzzled by the gifts' origin and whether they should take them. They decide to leave them there for the time being.

The story then shifts to Jem and Scout attending a nearby church service with Calpurnia, their family's African American housekeeper. The experience is new and different for them, as they are exposed to the African American community and their unique ways of worship. Scout realizes the existence of racial divisions and the struggles faced by the black community.

Following the church service, the children return home, where Aunt Alexandra is waiting. She is a strict and traditional woman who believes that the children need female influence in their lives. She has come to stay with the family for a while, much to Scout's dismay.

Aunt Alexandra's presence brings a change in the household dynamics. She insists that Scout should act more like a lady and discourages her from playing with Walter Cunningham, a poor boy from school. Aunt Alexandra's views on social class and her disapproval of the Cunninghams highlight the prevalent class distinctions in Maycomb.

Despite Aunt Alexandra's disapproval, Atticus allows Scout to continue spending time with Walter. One day, when Walter comes over for dinner, Scout unintentionally embarrasses him by criticizing his eating habits. Calpurnia intervenes and scolds Scout, teaching her about empathy and respect for others' differences.

The chapter concludes with Jem and Dill deciding to give Boo Radley a note, intending to invite him out to play. They construct a makeshift fishing pole to deliver the note through the Radleys' window. However, Atticus catches them in the act and warns them not to disturb the Radleys. Jem and Dill retreat, leaving the note unsent.

In Chapter 6 of "To Kill a Mockingbird" by Harper Lee, the main event is the children's attempt to get a glimpse of Boo Radley. The chapter is titled "When Jem Was Nearly Thirteen," and it revolves around Jem, Scout, and their friend Dill's growing curiosity about Boo Radley, the reclusive neighbor who is the subject of various rumors and legends.

Jem, Scout, and Dill devise a plan to get a closer look at Boo Radley's house. They sneak into his yard late at night, attempting to catch a glimpse of him through a window or perhaps coax him to come out. They approach the house cautiously, with Jem taking the lead.
