In running storytime at my library we always do a craft. While some parents are concerned about "getting it right", I always encourage children to take the lead and interpret the craft how they please, allowing for imaginative play through craft. I like to encourage the creativity and imagination of the kids, while also empowering parents to allow their children to lead play and not be so worried about making it exactly right, especially new parents who may already have concerns about doing the right thing in their parenting.

Absolutely love the idea of Hippy, disappointing however, that we don't have access to it here in the lower mid north. More outreach programs would be so beneficial. I run a and mentor a few playgroups in my area. Sadly, though, the ones who need it most do not attend (for many reasons) I can only really reach those who do without over stepping my professional boundaries

In our babies story time at the library we include free play at the end of the program. It has been a great social benefit not just for the children but for the carers who spend time socialising together and networking with each other the different programs, parks, activities that they have found in the community. With a mix of parents and grandparents, the sharing of parenting tips and support has been very positive as well.

In our toddler and baby playgroups we foster creativity and community through crafts, activities and free play. There is a lot of focus of both fine and gross motor skills for our older children throughout the planning. However once you set the craft/activity down its all about engagement. I'm trying to be mindful of commenting rather than questioning children during this time and put lots of emphasis on the effort they have put in. All of our programs have a free play element afterwards and watching the guardians come together and create their own communities within the space we have provided is so rewarding.
