Definitely fits in with social media. People put on a front of their 'perfect unattainable' life through Instagram which then leads their audience to compare themselves to the influencer and can often lead to poor self-esteem and poor value of self. Which is why it is so important to remail 'REAL' online

There is definitely room for backstage on places like Twitter, but social media definitely lends itself to front stage.

I think it does fit in. On each social media platform people use another performance. For instance on Facebook and Instagram people tend to put forward their best life and leave out more mundane aspects, whereas on a platform like twitter people are generally doing the opposite. And then you have platforms like reddit where it is largely anonymous, so people tend to either show themselves as they really are or as their worst possible selves (being "edgy" and whatnot)

I think that different people use social media in different ways. Some use it as a Front Stage, using platforms such as Facebook or Instagram to portray a highly edited, unrealistic, "perfect life" that does not fit with their reality. Others use these platforms in an Back Stage way, sometimes oversharing their messy, chaotic lives and personal details. These platforms can also give insight, through sharing of memes etc, into a persons ideas on social topics such as immigration, that you would not see in a general acquaintance type relationship.

Some like to create an image which could be a professional front yet others will pour out their heart with what is going on in there lives. My knowledge of Goffmans theory is limited to frontstage mask and backstage mask so with this limited view I would say Goffmans approach doesn't fit in with social media with way to may variables
