Date:
January 21st 1850
What Happened:
Henry Clay, a senator from Kentucky came up with a compromise for the California dilemma. He said that California would join the union but, New Mexico and Utah would be able to choose if they wanted to be free states or slave states. Another part of this compromise was the fugitive slave law. This law made any slave who escaped slavery and went north would have to be returned to their master. The compromise was accepted. The fugitive slave law also said anybody who helps a runaway slave is in legal trouble.
North's opinion:
The north did not like this because they did not want to enforce this law. Some places just didn't enforce it at all.
South's Opinion:
The South was mad that the North was not enforcing this law and many slave owners hired slave catchers to catch slaves because the North wasn't enforcing it.

Date:
1854
What Happened:
The United States wanted to run a railroad to California and to do that they wanted to open the Kansas and Nebraska Territories to settlers. The Kansas-Nebraska Act made Kansas and Nebraska official territories, eliminated the Missouri Compromise, and left the decision to free slaves up to voters from the states. The bill passed and many people came to the territories. Most were farmers but some moved there to help stop or to help spread slavery. 2 years later violence broke out between the abolitionists and slaveowners. This even lead to violence in Congress where Representative Preston Brooks of South Carolina beat Senator Charles Sumner of Massachusetts nearly to death with a cane.
North's Opinion:
The North believed that this act of violence reflected the entirety of the South and how they are reckless and violent.
The South's Opinion:
The Southerners loved what Preston Brooks did and awarded him with new canes and applauded him for what he did.

The court had to decide if he was even a citizen, and had to decide if this made him a free man. The court's decision said that he was not a citizen and did not have the right to go to the supreme court. They also decided that any African-American free or enslaved was not a citizen and did not have rights.
North's Opinion:
Many northerners were shocked by this ruling and were not happy and were called a wicked and false judgment.
South's Opinion:
The South was very happy with this ruling because it solved the issue of slavery in the territories for slave owners.
