How is your chosen group disadvantaged by the current design or availability of public washrooms? Include specific examples, anecdotes, and stories from the chapter

- Changing stations in public washrooms are typically sized for babies, so this puts toddlers at a disadvantage as they are too big for the stations and sometimes don't have a place to rest their heads.

- A lot of diaper changing stations are located in disability stalls while others are outside of stalls, but if a family is occupying the disability stall its inaccessible to people with disabilities

- There are not many diaper changing stations in men's washrooms which puts children with 2 fathers or single dads at a disadvantage

What historical evidence or political events can you find in the book about equitable washroom use as experienced by the members of this group?

- In California, the state legislature with broad support approved the Two Potty Parity for Parents Acts bills that would have modified existing state laws to ensure that public places such as movie theatres and shopping malls installed diaper-changing tables in both men's and women's restroom
- But in 2014, Governor Jerry Brown voted them both stating "AT a time when so many have raised concerns about the number of regulations in California, I believe it would be more prudent to leave the matter of diaper changing stations to the private sector.

What is currently being done to address the issue? What groups/political activists are involved? What work are they doing in the area?

- In 2015, famous actor Ashton Kutcher, raised awareness for the issue, specifically in regards to the lack of babies changing stations in the mens washroom. He launched a Change.org campaign and posted it to his social media pages, grasping the attention of thousands and raising a lot of awareness to an issue that is not merely talked about enough.

- The BABIES “Bathrooms Accessible in Every Situation Act” was passed in the US in 2016. This act, signed into law by Obama, made sure that all publicly accessible federal buildings had a table or other device that would be suitable to change the diapers of those 3 or younger. Although this act was a great way to bring light to the issue, many buildings aren’t covered by this law which means that although this act was a start, it still leaves many issues to be resolved.

How do you see the situation unfolding in future? What innovations in the future will address the issues faced by the members of this group?

- I think that the responsibility has to be taken on by a person who has the power to make widespread change as right now, small changes are being made here and there but not anything drastic enough

- All bathrooms should have access to a changing table and any other baby-related necessities and these should be in both the men and women’s or gender neutral bathrooms.

- I feel like it is not a very difficult issue to resolve, it is a fundamental human right to be able to have access to sanitation and the fact that these services aren’t available everywhere strip many of that right.

Second resource:

https://news.temple.edu/news/2022-09-21/stalled-progress-history-bathroom-lesson-inequality

- “Sometimes when you’re doing research, you have to think about your own life. We all use restrooms regularly”

- People need to put themselves in the shoes of those vulnerable who are affected by this issue or else it will never be resolved. If nobody acknowledges the obvious and blatant inequality of restrooms, the problem will never be solved

- As a society it is our duty to accommodate to as many as possible, in this day and age, same sex couples should not have issues not being able to change their babies diaper, women should not be confined to having to use a restroom stall to breastfeed, parents shouldn’t have to be concerned about letting their child who is deemed ‘slightly too old’ to simply follow their parents’ gender identifying bathroom, single parents, specifically fathers, should have a safe space to bottle feed their child or change their diapers.
