From birth, Elizabethan era women were taught how to govern a household and perform domestic duties so that when they married, their husbands would be proud. It was as if their only purpose was to bear children and  manage the household. They weren't allowed to have their own identities.
We have come a long way since then, but we still have a long road ahead to complete equity.

This could only be done if the family was wealthy.

People who were able to dress themselves with expensive fabrics like dark velvets and silk were often wealthy and belonged to the upper class. As for the peasants, they dressed themselves in English cotton, often light fabrics. 

Today, mass production of clothing makes it affordable for everyone. Production of fabrics that used to be worn on nobles can be worn everyone. In today's education system, I feel that the education for teaching social grace and etiquette has become less popular, which is why students are acting with less moral discipline, resulting in the concept of 'teenage rebellion'.
