Encounter by Jane Yolen by Mrs. Liakonis

This is the story of Columbus’ landing in the Americas. The narrator of this story
is a boy of the Taino people. The Taino people lived in the region of the Americas where Columbus and his crew landed. Why do you think this title was chosen for this book? Explain using details from the text.

I think that the author chose the title Encounter for many reasons. One reason is that the taino boy looked at the strangers not in a very good way. No one else saw the strangers in which the boy did, which made him encounter them differently. Another reason is that the rest of the taino tribe was really nice and thought that the strangers were good. The taino tribe was giving the strangers gifts and made a feast for the european explorers.

I think Jane Yolen picked Encounter to be the title of this book because the Native Americans had never met the Europeans, and didn't know of their intentions to capture and kill them. The Native Americans gave Columbus and his crew gifts, and in exchange, the Europeans took the Native Americans captive as slaves and started destroying their culture. The word encounter, in this book, is a bad thing, as the Native Americans encountered Columbus and his crew, with negative things happening to their tribe and their culture after this encounter.

At first the Taino thought that the Europeans were good people and they offered them food, jewelry, parrots, etc. The Europeans wanted to claim the land and take the Tainos as slaves. The Taino thought that the Europeans were giving them really good stuff, like beads, string, etc. The Europeans actually didn't think that the stuff they offered the Tainos was valuable. Overall, "Encounter" was a good title for the book.

Encounter by Jane Yolen is a great book and it's title really shows the essence of the book. First of all, it is a bit mysterious. When you first read the title, you think to yourself, what happened during the "encounter." Did someone get hurt. Did someone get a compliment or, maybe they just became friends. But you never know until you read the book. One word titles also hook on a reader. It leaves you wanting more, even before you actually read it. Next, when you start to read the book, you realize that when the taino tribe meets the Europeans, it all seems fine, but the "encounter" seen from that little taino boy's perspective, he realizes that there is something going on that is wrong and sneaky. This "encounter" is about to change the taino culture forever. The title that Jane Yolen picked out fits the book perfectly, and shows you that if you "encounter" this book, you should definitly read it!!!

The Taino tribe was a Native American tribe whom' s land was conquered and taken over by the brave explorer, Christopher columbus. The true story, Encounter was called encounter because of how the Taino`s encountered Christopher and his crew. They were taken back to Europe as slaves and the whole Taino tribe was falling and decreasing by the moment, due to germs and diseases such as smallpox that Columbus brought with him to the island. The young boy who had predicted about the encounter in his dreams was right to try not to welcome Christopher. He was the only one to realize that Christopher and his crew were no good. All that christopher wanted was gold, gold, and more gold. He was greedy and unkind to the Taino. Although it is their tradition to welcome people, they should be more careful who they welcome.

The book is called Encounter because it is about a boy's encounter with Christopher Columbus. If the story had no title one of the first titles I would think of is Encounter. That title also kind of makes a good short summary. The encounter happens when the boy meets Christopher Columbus and his men. The cover also explains the title a little bit because it shows the boy meeting him and that is kind of like an encounter

The story is about the encounter with the Native Americans and the Europeans. Another reason is the encounter with the Native Americans and the Europeans is very important to the history of the Native Americans. Finally Jane Yolen chose this title because it shows how the Native Americans got conquered. They got got conquered because of that encounter.

Encounter fits the title of the book. Encounter means to face somebody unexpectedly. The Tainos didn't know Christopher Columbus was coming. I know because in the book, the boy explained how the the chief wanted to welcome their "visitors", but near the end of the book they stayed there and built buildings and claimed the land. Columbus even, forced them to make sacrifices to their gods, forced them to learn their language and made them believe in their religion. The Tainos thought they were just being friendly in the beginning, but they turned out to be pushy.

I think it is titled this because these people did not know that Christopher and his troops were coming. They kind of encountered or took over the land. Also, the little kid did not want to welcome these people. There leader wanted to encounter/meet them. That is why this book is called "Encounter".

This specific title Encounter is chosen for this book for many reasons that I will tell you. One is really the obvious reason, it is that the Taino people met the Europeans and met is a synonym for encounter. Next reason I think is that the Taino people never knew they were coming and was surprised. After that the explorers took them as slaves and gave them diseases by accident. They gave a disease called small pox. Even Columbus didn't even know he was going to reach a new land and find other people, so he was surprised, too. These are some reasons that they made the title, Encounter.
