I would use interpersonal awareness to look at issues through the eyes of other teachers. This is important so I make sure to suspend judgement and not inadvertently say something that I don't truly understand. I need to realize there are other points of view and that there could be background that I'm not aware of. The pitfalls are to remember to see it from the perspective of the other teacher(s) and not overreact so my actions contribute to the problem. Strong interpersonal awareness is built on empathy.

There are always different stories and challenges to raising a child. I would use interpersonal awareness to try and understand what I can do in collaboration with the parents/guardians in order to help achieve a student's goals, both with grades and behavior. Potential challenges could be that the parents may not be able to utilize interpersonal awareness themselves.

I will use interpersonal awareness to help create authentic connections with my students (working to understand where they are coming from and their personality). Potentially using interpersonal awareness could cause issues if I get too concerned with "explaining away" student's behaviors. All students still need to be held to high standards of behavior and participation.

I plan to use interpersonal awareness when working with my mentor teacher. I can learn to understand his perspective and methods while remaining empathetic (understanding where he is coming from) and acknowledging that he has been with these students all year and knows the backstory to each student that I do not. Potential challenges might be my inability to suspend judgment of failure to break away from my own archetype.

When students come into an already established classroom, it can be intimidating. Over the last week, we have had several new students. Some cry, some are shy, and some act as if they've been in the classroom the entire time. To be aware of these student's feelings and perspectives I can ask myself questions like "How does it feel in my classroom? Is the student keeping up with the rest of the class? Are they being appropriately challenged?" As the teacher, I would want to immediately want to start a relationship with the student and want to talk and welcome him/her. This might come off as intimidating, so I could try having the student talk with a fellow student to ease the nerves. I could also ask the parents to seek their perspectives and learn more about the student.

I plan to use interpersonal awareness when interacting with this stakeholder by attempting to understand their perspective and their motives. Some potential pitfalls might include: failure to suspend judgment, bias, or archetype. In addition, a challenge might occur when trying to set aside my ego for the good of the learning. I plan to overcome these pitfalls by consciously identifying my thoughts and feelings; I plan to act after I self-assess.

Sometimes I think they jump to conclusions about students based on known behavior patterns and makes mistakes. I do think they need to be more careful here though.

Interpersonal awareness is very important to a teacher's relationship with students. It is important, as a teacher, to be aware of we are communicating to students both directly and indirectly (through tone, body language, etc.). In addition, it is important to be aware of our perceptions of student communication. Are we hearing what students are saying or are we hearing our own presumptions or biases? We must also be aware of student backgrounds and assumptions that may enhance or inhibit communication between student and teacher. This includes any cultural or language differences that may not be pronounced but may inhibit effective communication.
