Group 2

Artist Study: Michelangelo Buonarroti & The Pietà

Art Movement and Era

Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonarroti Simoni (1475–1564) was an Italian artist known for sculpting, painting, architecture, and poetry during the Renaissance. This was a cultural movement that spanned from the 14th to the 17th centuries, focusing on the revival of classical art, humanism, and naturalism. Michelangelo is one of the greatest artists in history, famous for works like the Sistine Chapel ceiling, David, and The Pietà.

Style and Movement

Michelangelo's work is known for Realism, which aimed to show the human figure and emotions with accuracy and lifelike detail. He belongs to the High Renaissance, a period known for harmony, balance, and ideal beauty in art.

Tools, Materials, or Media

Michelangelo mainly used:

• Marble for sculptures

• Fresco for paintings

For The Pietà, he used Carrara marble, a high-quality white marble appreciated for its purity and ease of carving.

Techniques and Working Method

• Michelangelo carved directly into marble using a subtractive technique.

• He used chisels, hammers, rasps, and drills to create detailed works.

• He blended soft textures with strong forms to show the delicacy of human flesh and the solidity of stone.

• He had a deep understanding of anatomy, learned by studying cadavers, which helped him create realistic human bodies.

Composition and Arrangement

In The Pietà:

• The figures of Mary and Jesus create a balanced triangular shape, typical of Renaissance art.

• There is symmetry and harmony, with Mary’s robes forming flowing lines that lead the viewer’s eye.

• The main focus is on the lifeless body of Jesus, resting on Mary’s lap, emphasized by the contrast between smooth flesh and intricate fabric.

• Michelangelo skillfully used negative space and overlapping forms to create depth and a sense of three-dimensionality.

Applying Michelangelo’s Style to My Work

In my project, I can take inspiration from Michelangelo’s:

• Attention to anatomy, aiming to make human figures believable and expressive.

• Use of drapery and texture to create interest and direct viewer focus.

• Balanced composition, arranging elements harmoniously to make a strong focal point.

• If I work in two dimensions, I could use shading and highlights to simulate his sculptural effects and convey a sense of form and weight.

• If I work in three-dimensional media, like clay, I can follow his subtractive method and focus on the contours and proportions of the human figure.

Artist Study: Yayoi Kusama (Group 3) – Connected to My Topic: Reflection

Art Movement and Era

Yayoi Kusama, who was born in 1929, is a contemporary Japanese artist celebrated for her deeply personal and expressive creations. She emerged during the Postwar Contemporary Art period and made contributions to Pop Art, Minimalism, and Conceptual Art while maintaining her distinct viewpoint. Her artwork frequently delves into her inner thoughts and emotions, which relate closely to my theme of Reflection.

Style and Movement

Kusama’s artistic style conveys her feelings through her signature polka dots, which symbolise infinity and her visions. She merges elements of Surrealism, Conceptualism, and Pop Art to fashion immersive installations that encourage viewers to reflect on themselves.

Tools and Materials

The materials she employs include:

- Acrylic paintings

- Soft fabric or fibreglass sculptures

- Mirror and light installations

I find her use of mirrors particularly inspiring, as they prompt viewers to contemplate their presence within the space.

Techniques and Working Method

Kusama’s meticulous and repetitive methods create infinite spaces that invite self-reflection. Her precise brushwork and hand-crafted sculptures exhibit remarkable introspection.

Composition and Arrangement

In one of her installations, the viewer is enveloped by red and white polka dots, creating a feeling of immersion in her thoughts. The following, inflatable forms represent the constantly shifting nature of ideas.

How I Can Use Kusama’s Style in My Work on Reflection

For my project, I intend to:

- Integrate repeated shapes and patterns to symbolise recurring thoughts.

- Utilise vibrant colours to attract attention and encourage reflection.

- Develop an immersive composition using mirrors.

- Fill the canvas to depict how reflection occupies the mind.

Artist Study: Yayoi Kusama (Group 3) – Connected to My Topic: Reflection
