Remember: It is your responsibility to work within your scope of practice!

It is important for you to ensure your practice educator is assigned at the beginning of your placement. Please ensure you contact your placement before commencing to ensure an educator has been assigned to you on your first day.

Additionally, you will need to ensure that your orientation and initial interview are completed ideally on the first day. As PARE is your responsibility we encourage you to make sure that this is carried out timely, and that any concerns are raised early enough for your assessor assist.

All learners are expected to partake in the service hours of your placement environment (e.g. the 24 hour / 7 days a week shift pattern)

Please be respectful to the LEELs who complete your off duty.

Any changes to the off duty need to be discussed with the LEELs or Team Lead to ensure adequate supervision and support for learners on each shift.

It is the learners responsibility to report sickness / absence to your placement area prior to your shift. Upon returning to practice please contact the team to inform them of your return.

Please ensure you follow the university guidance in reporting absence.

Car Parking Permit System

Please note, until you have a valid parking permit, you cannot park on a hospital site unless you are parking as a visitor in one of the pay and display car parks. As a learner without a valid permit, you can pay the non-permit discounted rate of £6 per day (please contact the car parking team for more information). If you park on the hospital site without a valid permit or without paying, you could be issues with a Penalty Charge Notice (PCN).

If you are not following the correct uniform policy, you may be asked to leave placement and return when you are adhering to policy.

1. Read and action the welcome information from the PEF team. Email is sent 2 weeks before your start date.

2. Contact your learning environment (details can be found on InPlace) - find out where you need to go / what time to arrive. Check what IT access you will require, if you need an ID badge and car parking. Check you have a contact number for the team! If you have any health conditions/reasonable adjustments, now would be a good time to let them know so they can prepare for your placement. Let your PEF team know if you are struggling.

3. Await your log in from the PEF.inbox for the Kallidus Learning Hub. Once you have this, please complete the relevant training and book to attend your MFT induction and fire safety if necessary.

They specialise in working with families with a child aged 0 to five to identify health needs as early as possible and improve health and wellbeing by promoting health, preventing ill health and reducing inequalities. 

Your day-to-day role may vary from area to area, but will typically include:

• supporting parents during their transition to parenthood and in the weeks following the birth of their baby

• providing support and advice for the initiation and duration of breast feeding, infant feeding and healthy eating for young children

• assessing children’s growth and development needs

• delivering health reviews to assess children’s growth and development needs, including the two-year health review and to be ready for school

• promoting the best start in speech, language and communication including identification of need and additional support to be ready to learn

• supporting maternal and infant mental health

• supporting healthy weight and healthy nutrition conversations to prevent childhood obesity through behaviour change techniques.

• advising on minor illness, home safety, safer sleep and accident prevention

A small percentage (2%) of Manchester people are very vulnerable and have complex physical health, mental health and social care needs. They often find it difficult to navigate and access the standard healthcare system due to the multiple difficulties they are facing.

Some people end up using hospital-based services such as A&E as a default, and more frequently, as they find it difficult to keep themselves healthy, safe and well at home. MCM is designed to support people with the most complex health and care needs in the community so they are less reliant on hospital and other urgent care services.

The MCM teams are led by a GP, working alongside a nurse, social worker, wellbeing adviser and pharmacist. Each team builds links with the local community and works in partnership with primary care services, the integrated neighbourhood team (the team of community health and social care services in the neighbourhood), mental health services and other local voluntary services and community groups. The service offer is tailored to the goals and aspirations of each individual person, joining up care and support to best meet their needs.

Children identified as having a learning disability are living longer, more fulfilled lives into adolescence, adulthood and older age. Learning disability nurses play a vital role working across the whole life span in both health and care settings. 

The main areas of your role as a learning disability nurse involve:

• improving or maintaining a person’s physical and mental health

• reducing barriers to them living an independent life

• supporting the person in living a fulfilling life

Learning disability nurses may also help people to learn the skills needed to find work. This can be significant in helping them to lead a more independent and healthy life where they can relate to others on equal terms.

You'll work in a range of settings and you’ll work as part of a team including GPs, psychologists, social workers, teachers, general practitioners, occupational therapists, speech and language therapists and healthcare assistants.

As a district nurse, you'll 

• assess the healthcare needs of patients and families

• monitor the quality of care they're receiving

• be professionally accountable for its delivery

Your patients could be any age, but they'll often be elderly, while others may have been recently discharged from hospital, be terminally ill or have physical disabilities.

You'll be visiting patients every day or more than once a day, offering help, advice and support. You may work on your own or with other groups, such as the social services, voluntary agencies and other NHS organisations and help to provide and co-ordinate a wide range of care services.

As well as providing direct patient care, you'll have a teaching and support role, working with patients to enable them to care for themselves or with family members teaching them how to give care to their relatives.

You'll play a vital role in keeping hospital admissions and re-admissions to a minimum and ensuring that patients can return to their own homes as soon as possible. 

You’ll work in partnership with schools, children’s social care professionals, GPs, health visitors, allied health professionals, and voluntary services to meet the needs of children and young people.

The school nurse’s day-to-day role varies from area to area, but will typically, include:

• working with other professionals to keep children safe, support local safeguarding arrangements, and ensure that the voice of the child is considered

• supporting holistic assessment of children and young people’s mental health and wellbeing needs, and providing mental health promotion, prevention and early intervention approaches

• carrying out health assessments to identify risk-taking behaviours and supporting children to keep safe

• supporting development and delivery of relationships, sex and health education (RSHE) in education, schools and other settings

• offering individual support to children, young people and families to manage lifestyle concerns and change behaviours, for example related to healthy weight

• early identification of vulnerability that may impact on the child or young person’s education or school attendance. This may include being a young carer, being a child in care, experiencing domestic or emotional abuse or parental substance misuse

• supporting children and young people who have complex and long-term health needs

• helping children and young people to develop a knowledge of self-care, autonomy and decision making, including how to access health services

• Ensure clothes are suitable for work purposes, are clean and in a good state of repair, always maintaining a standard of professionalism.

• Clothes should be free from strong smells, for example, body odour, cigarettes and vapes, etc.

• Shoes must be closed toe in line with health and safety policy, apart from staff working in an office environment.

Examples of clothing deemed unacceptable for non-uniformed staff

• Jeans*/cargo trousers

• Jeggings/leggings (unless covered by a tunic/dress)

• T-shirts with any offensive logo

• Jogging bottoms

• Shorts*

• Camouflage

• Miniskirts/dresses

• Sun, beach or spaghetti strap dresses/tops

• Any clothing that is overly revealing of the cleavage, stomach, midriff or thighs is unacceptable

• Sweatshirts* or hooded tops

• Flip flops

• Sports wear

• Halter neck or strapless tops or dresses

• Socks with offensive logo

*These items may be acceptable in some circumstances where agreed with the manager, due to the nature of the work

Last week, the UK’s terrorism threat level was raised to Severe. MFT’s Security teams are working closely with Greater Manchester Police and continue to take appropriate action to keep our sites safe. While strong security measures are in place, everyone plays a part in maintaining a safe, secure and welcoming environment for patients, visitors and colleagues.

Here are six simple steps all staff can take every day to help: 

• Wear your ID badge clearly and visibly

• Don’t allow tailgating into restricted areas

• Challenge politely with a friendly, “Hello, can I help?”

• Keep security doors closed

• Lock cupboards and cabinets when not in use

• Report concerns promptly to a senior colleague or Security
