The statement about special education students and high ability students working together and both benefiting from the activity. Most of my classes that I teach have a large spread between high ability and lower level students and finding activities to engage them and have them work together and both benefit from an activity is great for all learners. Sometimes those activities are hard to find but watching the video of the students categorizing you observe that everyone has input into the activity.

"Forces them to think outside the box especially with our stretch questions"

I have found in my own classroom that if I can get this to happen then students gain a much higher chance of hanging on to their understanding for a certain topic. I think the stretching questions from the teacher are key in guiding this process. These questions need forethought but just like the activity, a teacher should be open to changing their mind/questioning during the process.

This is a great way to use original schema, and then build upon that schema as the unit progresses, which in turn results in natural inference skills.

This strategy would help build an understanding of the vocabulary words that is not as artificial as just "memorizing" the definition. By comparing and sorting the pictures the students are able to gain an understanding of their relationships between one another. This could only help retain the words longer and help the students use the words in the future.
