The Scopes trial was a trial that started in Tennessee on July 10, 1925. The reason why the trial started was because a man named John Scopes, a substitute high school science teacher that taught students about evolution one day at a high school in Tennessee. This angered a lot of people in the south because at the time it was very religious and the people in the south did not believe in evolution. The people in the south only believed word for word from the bible. There was a law put in place in Tennessee that did not allow the teaching of evolution the Butler Act. The law was used to prosecute John Scopes of breaking the law and to pay a fine of $100. The trial lasted over 11 days in which John Scopes was found guilty in the end. There were two lawyers Darrow and Bryan, Darrow defended Scopes and Bryan prosecuted. The trial was treated like a carnival where there was exhibits featuring two monkeys and many vendors which sold bibles, toy monkeys, hotdogs and lemonade. After there was so many people in the courtroom the trial got moved to the front lawn. Bryan had prepared a speech for weeks and was denied so that the jury could reach a guilty verdict. The Tennessee Supreme court would overturn this verdict in 1927.

This topic effected and changed society for many reasons here are some reasons why. It gave more rules to what a teacher could teach and could not teach. It also changed the economy and culture because people that would buy products relating to the case. The case would change the culture as the view of evolution being taught in school would change. These would change as people later would realize that it was to teach evolution in schools. The influence it had on teaching would last a long time further improving education and what was taught and not taught in classrooms. This influence would last a long time from when is started in 1925 to today. This change would then prompt other changes such as change in teaching curriculum textbooks and many more. These are some effects and changes of the topic of evolution.
