I am glad that most of them did not feel that they experienced racism at the high school but Matt's point is also critical - he didn't feel different but he knew he was the minority. Representation is of the utmost importance and as we continue to evolve professionally as a staff I hope we also continue to grow in our diversity.

I think this is where curriculum is so important for creating empathy between students of whatever background and the "other." I know at least in ELA class I have opportunity to expose students to diversity on a daily basis through stories and poetry, and include BIPOC voices in every unit, but I believe this possible across all curriculum. This helps to make up for the lack of diversity that Matt mentions in student body (although it seems to be more diverse at WMHS now).

I decided to open myself up and not pick a friend or a teammate. Little did I know I would be rooming with a student from West Africa - Ghana. I was ashamed at how little I knew about different cultures, like those in Africa and other places. At that moment I made it a point to always listen and step in other people's shoes and to learn about different cultures. This exposure drove me into teaching in a lot ways.

I know many successful introverts that can behave in an extroverted fashion as necessity calls for it. It is good advice to teach introverts how to engage with others and how it will lead to more success.

As an introvert myself, I can say that the best thing I did to build relationships and find friends was to join a club or after school activity. If I could go back in time to high school, I would urge myself to join more activities or clubs. Many of us introverts really do not like unstructured social time. Words like "party","mingling", and "networking" are fairly terrifying, so telling shy people to "network" or "put yourself out there" is not at all helpful. Joining a group where there is something to DO is a much more comfortable way to make friends and build a network of relationships.

There's a lot of ideas that remain the same throughout this discussion: network, be brave, find role models, and it's interesting to consider how we can support this as teachers. Through offering students books written by POC, finding representation and making space for it in the classroom, but also I wonder how my classroom can work as a place to ready students into people who know how to network and understand what their personal style of networking and advocacy is and looks like. Or is this just something to be aware of in understanding our students' struggle? Many aren't mentioning that a specific class helped... but they are mentioning relationships with teachers. Makes you reconsider where our priorities should be as teachers!

I think many students see the drive & passion that their parents have (or lack thereof) and that has a direct impact on the drive they will have as they grow up. Students need a person to look up to so they can be motivated to succeed. I always like to push the idea of a "productive struggle" and how things don't come easy, but you'll learn and grow from those challenges.

I love that the question was turned back on Steve and I think a lot of us get our motivation from seeing the success of our students. I would love to keep panels of graduates going to keep talking to students - not just around issues of race but other topics in the "real world". It would also allow teachers to reconnect with old students.

Would love to see more of our students right now step out of their comfort zone. I think that will be something that is even more difficult to promote in post-pandemic life but you can see how important it was - even for kids just to be involved with sports/activities they are comfortable with at school.
