The first benefit is the way you think has a huge impact on the severity of pain and symptoms one may be experiencing, and just the thought of getting a medication could potentially help someone feel better almost immediately.
Another benefit is it reduces the amount of side effects that certain drugs give because chemicals aren't actually entering the body.
The first downside is the fact that doctors can't ethically give placebos, because they would be lying to their patients and if they told them it was a placebo that essentially defeats the entire purpose. Another downside is that placebo pills make it harder for actual painkillers that could potentially be beneficial to become certified and enter the market.

2 benefits-
1. Because of the placebo effect some people can recover from their illness without need for medication . It shows how the brain can trigger the healing process in the body (because it thinks the body is recovering).
2. Placebo's can lessen Parkinson's symptoms and inflammatory diseases.

2 concerns-
1. Placebo's can seem unethical because patients do not know that they aren't being treated with chemical medication.
2. Placebos aren't always reliable because they don't target the illness. There is still so much unknown about how it actually works.

Pros:
- The placebo effect allows for patients to experience relief, or even physical results (e.g. tumor shrinkage) just by perceiving something as potentially helpful
- Allows for researchers to study and understand the human brain in new, unprecedented ways. Eventually, should help in medical research and other applications.

Cons:
- Proves that a patient's mindset can impact their progress considerably...seems like terminal or otherwise depressed patients could have a harder time improving physically because of their mental state
- Harder for drug companies to get drugs past trial stages because it's become difficult to prove they're more effective than their placebo counterparts. Aka, blocks progress in science advancements

A patients beliefs and expectations can have a positive effect on the course of their illness and so if they believe it is helping them, they are more likely to feel better.

Placebo effect reminds me of manifesting something to happen, or in other words, putting something out into the universe for it to happen. The farewell is a movie that reminds me of the placebo effect- a grandma has cancer but the doctors lie to her and her family keeps it a secret, and the stage 4 cancer goes away after a few months...

Pros- Placebos allow comparison to other drug research and also minimizes the expectations that drugs should have. It also allows people to have relief with symptoms

Cons- Placebos might not work. So, given someone has cancer and you give them a placebo (like Dr. Wright) and the placebo doesnt work- the patient can die. But with the popularization on placebo pills, drug companies are struggling to legalize and produce actual pain killers that work.

Benefit

One benefit of the placebo effect is since longer and longer drug trials are seeming to have the postiive affect of peoples pain going down even when they receive the placebo drug that can stop people from becoming addicted to a pill. Another benefit of the placebo is it helps to see which drugs are affective and which are not effective

Concerns

since a placebo is not the actual drug the patient could have bad side affects that would be doing the opposite of the drug

Drug companies are having difficult times getting drugs through trials bc placebos are doing the same things as the drugs so there isnt proof that the drug is working or not.

Pros:
1. Can subconsciously cause your body to respond to the fake drug like it would to the normal drug and actually "fix" your ailment
2. Placebos reduce anxiety – taking the placebo and expecting to feel better may be soothing and reduce the levels of stress chemicals the body produces, such as adrenaline. Brain chemicals – placebos may trigger the release of the body's own natural pain relievers, the brain chemicals known as endorphins.

Cons:
1. There can be times when an individual doesn’t have a response to the placebo at all. When that outcome occurs, then the effects of a process or medication can receive a direct comparison to see if the real product is useful. Some people can have an adverse reaction to the placebo, even producing unwanted side effects as if they were taking a real medication.
2. Placebos have the power to cause unwanted side effects, because the person feels as if they have actually taken the drug but it can end up causing more damage than good

Concerns:

The growing of the placebo effect in the United States is making approving potentially incredibly helpful drugs more difficult as it is harder to differentiate the positive effects of the drug compared to the positive effects of the placebo effect. Another concern is that the placebo effect isn't guaranteed. As mentioned in the article, as soon as the man began to doubt the legitimacy of the drug, he started to become sick again. This makes it impossible to depend on the placebo effect long term and it might interfere with treatment.

Benefits:

The placebo effect can influence how a person's body responds and, in the event there is no effective treatment for an illness, this effect could save someone's life. Another benefit is that people don't need to put on heavy medication as much with this effect which could reduce the amount of side effects and addiction rates.
